Replacing snare sound.

I've done a search and haven't had much luck. I have a snare drum track (recorded live, played by a real drummer) and the snare sound sucks. I want to replace the snare with a better sound. Can I create a MIDI track triggered by a properly gated snare drum track and use that to play a sampler? Is there another way around the problem?
