(Season Of Mist)

Man, Cryptopsy have been back on a tear for a while now, and An Insatiable Violence continues the spree, opener “The Nimis Adoration” being as extreme as we want ’em to be but also with a nice deft touch on the soaring guitar work.

The Canadian DM legends ain’t missteppin’ here, probably ain’t never missteppin’ again ever, as wicked groove-grinder “Until There’s Nothing Left” proves, as “Dead Eyes Replete” proves even harder, the band nodding to their past while managing to sound totally fresh, yet not exhaustingly modern, all at once.

Everything is just smart here, “The Art Of Emptiness” blasting and raging yet, again, taking some time to showcase some tasteful guitar work, while disorienting closer “Malicious Needs” stretches out a bit at almost six minutes, but never loses sight of why Cryptopsy are still kings of brutal technical death metal.

And even though that song is longer, the album isn’t, and I love the brevity. Cryptopsy is always wise with their album lengths, and it matters: this one clocks in at just under 34 minutes, which is almost the scientifically proven perfect length for an album of this intensity, An Insatiable Violence leaving the listener energized and ready, not worn and beaten.

So, yeah, Cryptopsy’s tear continues, and there’s hard to find much at fault on this killer album.
