Well, after spending time with a number of troubled children this past weekend, I can say Im qualified to give a fair review of kids with the social disorders, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). I will break this review into two segments.
First off is ADD. These kids are weird. They cant follow directions because they have no concentration whatsoever. You say, "Billy, go get your lunch and come back here," and 20 minutes later someone else drags Billy back to the group with no lunch, but more puzzling being covered in some sort of cream sauce. How did this happen? Half of these children dont take their medication, and part of me feels bad for them. They're not idiots, per-se, but they need extra attention and they tend to slow down the group. I found a number to be very eager to help others. This was surprising and I was grateful they had this quality. What they lacked in mental sharpness they made up for in selflessness. Overall I give these kids a 4/10. It seems they have the right ideas, but applying the skills needed to get the job done is almost impossible. The actions didnt do much for me, and these kids are on my over rated list.
Next up is my personal favorite, ADHD. These kids had me in stitches. Hyper activity is hilarious to my eyes. While waiting for a bus, young Kyle started to pick on some classmates. Flicking ears, stabbing chests with his fingers and yelling were some of the funny antics. After being told to stop, Kyle held up his fists and srated shaking them as fast as he could, while simultaneously grunting and groaning. Pretty soon his entire upper body was shaking uncontrolably. It was priceless. It had to be seen to be believed! Why these kids are so out of control is a mystery. It seems no medication can help them. Also constants in the group activities were swearing, bouncing, running and sniffing each other (yes, sniffing!! LOL!) I give these kids a 8/10. I hope on their next outing they put forth a great followup to this trip and stick to their roots. I cant stand when kids with ADHD sellout by taking their medications and completely forget where they came from. We need more hyperactivity to keep things interesting, not boring tired focused individuals.
