Shadow Of A Fallen Star Pt. 2 is of course the follow-up to Pt. 1 from 2021. The English elegant metallers crack 38 minutes in just 4 tracks, echoing sentiments of a ‘70s Rush record. The concept is a sci-fi story, so there are naturally some spacey moments. Seven Sisters melds traditional heavy metal, power metal, and ‘70s rock/prog with ambitious songwriting, impressive instrumentation, and smooth vocals.
8-minute opener “Astral Prophecies” sets the tone as a quiet intro launches into twin leads and nifty drum nuances Neil Peart would be proud of. It’s prog/power metal maelstrom with a graceful English flair.
The middle two cuts could be considered the “single material”. “Solar Winds” is a stylish, composition blending a trad metal stomp and power metal intricacies working towards a thoughtful balance of heavy and catchy. “Heart Of The Sun” comes in with melodic guitars in a backdrop of keys and immediately reminds of Seventh Son-era Maiden. It’s like the spiritual successor to “The Evil That Men Do”.
The Star of this Fallen Star is the 20-minute “Andromeda Descending (A Fallen Star Rises)”. Props to these guys crafting a song this long and being interesting and compelling throughout. It’s a mash of driving guitars, space synth wizardry, Steve Harris-esque bass lines, feelings of wonder and triumph, and a brilliant vocal performance from the warm voice of Kyle McNeill. The transitions echo of a classic Rush epic and Fates Warning plus the middle section with interplay of the synth and vocals is clever.
A gratifying and fulfilling listen – highly recommended.
