For the really cheap University student, it was Big Bear...$1.85 Canadian (back when our dollar was hovering around 65 cents US) for a 40 ounce bottle of 8% beer. Sure, it tasted awful, and it made you go blind by drinking it, but you could get pretty loaded for less than 6 bucks...what more could a college student ask for?
