RIP Mike Starr

Must admit, I had to google him.
The report says original AIC bassist...

Wouldn't that be Jim Sheppard actually?

Dude shut the fuck up. Nobody cares that you're a megadork. This is a sad thread and he was responsible for performing on two of my favorite 90's era albums. Yeah he was a drug addict, but that doesn't mean he deserved to die.

Did you mean this to him or Simon? I don't see Jasonic's post as saying anything in that vein. I had to think about who he was for a moment before it finally clicked with me...

To Jason, and the idea that he "wasn't the original bassist of AIC, Jim Sheppard was" or whatever. Jim never played on their albums, so what's the point in even saying that other than to belittle the dude's involvement in the band?

I guess if it isn't to belittle Mike's involvement in the band, it's to score e-points by being the metal master.

Understood. You took it a little differently than I did, but hey, that's what opinions are for. Just waiting on someone to come in here and tell you that yours is wrong

lol fair enough. I mean even if you're not a fan of the band I don't know how one could've assumed Jim played on Dirt and Facelift when he was obviously in Nevermore, so I don't give him a pass on ignorance.

Either way this is a sad story. He's not in the band anymore, but it still sucks to know that AIC's classic lineup is now half-dead. :(

It's really sad how he was whitewashed out of the AIC legacy . . and how easily it happens to band members.

if Jasonic wanted to showoff his metalcred here, he'd name the Sun Red Sun angle . . Mike Starr was the bassist for that 90s troublecenter .along with Ray Gillen.

Where did anyone do that?

I'm not going to debate this further than this post, but you should take your own veiled advice and read posts better. (inb4 "where did I say that? hurr durr")

The statement you were quoting was a hypothetical, pondering that Jasonic's definition of an original member could be one who played on the band's first recorded LP, and since he didn't know who Mike Starr was, one could assume he made an honest mistake bythinking the news story he read incorrectly listed Starr as an original member -- if that is he didn't play on that first CD and Jim did. I would give this a pass on the basis of ignorance -- i.e. not knowing that Mike Starr was the original member of AIC, if your definition of original member is the member of the band who appeared on the first official material (again CD, EP, single, etc).

However, since we ALL know that Jim Sheppard was in Nevermore during this time, I don't see how the aforementioned hypothetical could've been the case. Thus, Jasonic's definition of original member is the member of the band who is in the first iteration of that band. If you argue the usage of "original member" here, you're doing so because you're a jerk and a nerd, trying to score metal points when nobody really cares. Alot of media defines "original member" as the member of the band who first performed on the CD, not the one who joined, and arguing who should REALLY be credited with original member is pointless semantics in the face of a sad story such as this one.

Do I have to spell it out further for you, or do you need to bang out another quick, smugly condescending post that ultimately fails at its own implication (that I misread)?

What is sad (besides the obvious passing of a musical soul) is that people can't f*cking create threads with clear titles, and barring that, first posts that give us a clue. I GET it that I'm a dinosaur of journalism where the clear written word mattered, but don't we all waste so much time figuring out wtf people are posting, tweeting, etc. ? Or is it just me? Suspect so.

Whatever. I feel bad about Mike. RIP, dude. May you family and friends craft a clearer epithet.

Well said, Ann Marie.

Not getting on Cherion, but I'm just getting futzed on these "personalized" threads. Too many posters are into "The Thread is About Me!" and it's becoming seriously irritating. Not this one, though, so misplaced.

Alice in Chains was -the- band to me in my high school years. I first heard of them through a friend on a way to a boy scout outing, but my dad was driving, and the person whose tape it was wasn't sure if my dad was okay with it so after a little bit he turned it off. But I was definitely interested. At that time I had little extra money to go and buy CDs, so it wasn't till later that some other friends got the albums that I really started to listen to them. Soon after that I bought Jar of Flies, and that to today ranks as one of my favorite albums. Now that one has Inez on bass; however, I then got into Dirt and Facelift, both played by Mike Starr. I don't have a clue how much Starr had to do with the sound, but he was a band member in the early years and for 2 incredible albums. I don't think I even knew back then the drama. I was the fan who had no idea that Layne was a drug addict, so I certainly didn't know that Starr was. I did know that he was on my friend's AiC poster, so to me he was -the- bassist. It wasn't till later years that I realized that he was no longer with the band and Inez was the new bassist.

So yes, RIP to a band member on one of the greatest rock bands to ever exist.

My brother got mad at me because Facelift was played over and over and over in my car from beginning to end on a daily basis when it first came out.I just couldn't take it out of my cd player. He finally said one day,he was going to start a band and simply call it "Not AIC".I just hope his family can forgive him of his troubles and be there for each other in this time of grief.

WOW!!!! Calm the f*ck down Aeonic......

My post was in response to the actual news report of this story, that stated Mike Starr to be their "original" bassist. I always thought it was Jim Sheppard that was...... Nothing more, nothing less.

I am more than aware that Sheppard did not play on any studio release.
I have seen the original AIC lineup live, and recall very well when they first came on the scene.

Maybe you are just taking it too personal, since you appear to be a big fan which is cool and all. I still think you reacted way too harsh to my comment, though I am not losing any sleep over it.

Here is the deal..... I do not try to be a moderator, net police or anything like that. In fact, despite these petty squabbles that seem to be commonplace here, I simply do not get involved...... normally. I make the exception here !! I am not going to point out any particular person/people, but Mike Star was someone's Son. He was probably someone's best friend and he very well may have been someone's Brother and/or Father. I know very little about him, but I want his loved ones to know that I am sorry for their loss and I am sorry for the way that this forum has disrespected the news of his passing.
