Rise Of The Tyrant licked!!

What high standards we all have these days! Its a good thing though. Records just consistently sound better nowadays. When i listen to this mix it sounds a bit more modern but reminds of nordstroms mixes in the late 90s and just a bit later. You could even in my opinion, kind of call this mix an attempt to recapture the burning bridges sound but fall a little short. Anyone agree?

I really think everyones being just a bit brutal on Mr Nordstrom though. I certainly find this record to be listenable. I can honestly say when i listen to it that the engineering itself appears to be Killer, and that it sounds like maybe the mix was a bit overthought.

We've ALL been there, Andy and Colin and any of the big mixers will tell you how second guessing and overtweaking, can ruin a mix. Also, sometimes there is too many people involved or the vision just isnt happening with the tracks that are present, in which case you should let tracks really set the tone. Rather than try for something that isnt there.

That being said, there is much worse sounding things coming out. Im also digging the songs like i said before, the solos just rip.

i would like to second everything you just said

i heard it on the century media site and A/B with the track of "nemesis" they have on there and its not even close.

the difference isnt even funny. nemesis kicks its ass. the music si good, but the mix IMHO is horrendous. the drums aren;t punchy, the guitars aren't clear at all. its like the guy was mixing with desktop speakers or something. dissapointed. i truly think that the demo songs must be like screwed up or something, if the actual album is like this then boo too nordstrom and whoever else mastered or supervised anything. either that or their goal was to make a album which sounds like it was recorded with 2 mics. a room mic and a vocal mic... thats what it sounds like.

Having been use to the older AE productions, I'd say the biggest let down for me would be the toms and guitars. Compare those to Clayman and you would be forgiven for thinking that it was a totally different engineer.

Holy shit, a Nordstrom mix with bad toms? What the hell happened? Did his studio burn down halfway through tracking?

I've yet to hear this, but that last statement didn't make me happy at all, Dan...

I have only listened thru the album once but initial impressions r that i quite like it. songs r much more old school AE (which i think is a good thing).
Mix wise i bet the mix is fine but it sounds like its squashed to hell at mastering so guitars end up dominating and drums loose all attack. Hopefully this isnt proper master and final version will be eased off to let the drums back into the party.

I think everyone is being pretty critical with the mix considering it is a leak and that it is just a promo copy as well. I didn't care for what I heard mix wise but musically...freaking bad ass.

Musically this is exactly the direction I was hoping Arch Enemy would go in (more 80s shred in there.) Loving the album, especially track 5!!

Production wise, it's a bit strange and cavernous sounding. The drums in particular sound considerably weaker in the mix than on Doomsday Machine. I think Nordstrom has done a good job overall, but ultimately I hope Arch Enemy comes back to Andy for the next record! This definitely isn't Nordstrom's best work, although it is still pretty good.

I will definitely be buying this CD when it comes out!

this album is amazing! i love the way the songs sound kind of rough on first listen but as you listen more you realise how well crafted they are. unfortunately the more you listen the more you realise the mix is a bit out too - but i don't think people who don't listen out for the mix will notice so much. it's great that chris is back too. he's on fire!

What I still think is pretty funny is that everybody is like great he's back (which it is offcourse). But actually he has never been away album wise. He did record the whole of Doomsday, just didn't do the touring on it...
Now he's back on Tyrant and also goes touring..which is cool!
