rock mix (think a perfect circle)

I just finished a project and i'm pretty satisfied with the results.
The band is called "Believe is a Doubt" They play something in the vein of A perfect circle, Thrice and Cave In.

The Engl topic made me think about posting this. I never was that much of an Engl fan (especially not the powerball) I even asked the band if they could arrange a different amp but ended up using it anyway, haha. I actually think it worked really well for this music.

anyway, i'm curious what you guys think of it.

I think it sounds great and I dig the music. I'm a huge Cave In and PC fan and I hear some influence there but they're still original. I am, however craving the bright presence of a Marshall in the guitars. They still sound great, but I like that bright tone for this style of music.

I think some ambient space or delay on the lead guitar would sound fantastic

Oh yeah, and perhaps ease off the autotuner on some of those long notes. (I'm assuming an autotuner was used) It just seems that some of those long notes in the middle of the song are a little too perfect.

Great job overall though!

thanks:)

before the recodings i went over to a rehearsal to listen to the songs and talk about sounds and that was the first thing i thought (and said) "we need a marshall or an orange (or both!) the sound they had before the recordings was a lot more nu-metalish, this was already quite a revolution for them since we took down the gain quite a lot and brought some mids in. Also we used the crunch channel of both amps (powerball and dual recto) for rhtyhms, the clean for crunch and the low gain lead for leads, so we bassicly moved all the sounds back one step in gain stages. anyway, one of the guitarplayers is now looking for an orange so probably on the next recordings you'll hearsome nice EL34 crunch and presence in it:)

haha, yeah, the autotune was a point of discussion in the mixing. the only one who actually disliked it being that perfect was the singer himself but the rest of the band liked the "radio friendly" feal better than the "emo" feal. however, there wasn't to much difference between the autotuned and un-autotuned tracks. the singers performance was really great and we ended up using a lot of parts without autotune. i'm not even sure if it was on on those words

thnx man! we recorded the drums in a brick room with concrete floor. i really tried to use the accoustics in my advantage rather then to fight it and get a dry sound.

kit was a pearl masters birch

kick: 902
snare top: 57
snare bottom: 906
toms: 904
OH's: NT1000
room: a pair of 421's in XY position, 4 feet in front of the kickdrum, aimed away from the kit.

mixing this band was really cool and challenging because i got to fool around a lot with differnt sounds for each song and different sounds within the songs.
oh yeah: this was the band i was looking for a china sample for a few weeks back... i ended up using the original china, downtuning it and compressing the hell out of it.

great stuff, cave ins antenna is one of my alltimefaves!
i'm just a noobish german guy but wouldn't it have to be belief
instead of believe ?!

just had a listen to this, sounds great.

how much sample augmentation or replacing was done on the drums? they sound fantastic..

only thing I thing that could have been done is a bit more automation on the loud/quiet parts.. when they hit they don't 'hit' me... maybe bring up the room sound more or compress it more for the choruses..

i'm hearing alot of that type of stuff, but not enough to exaggerate the mix to that euphoric level.

great band, great work.

:)
