Roxul for superchunks + 703 for broadband absorbers?

yay/nay ?

the Roxul is cheaper AND seems to have better low frequency absorption, so it makes sense to me to use it in the corners and then use 703 for my early reflection points.

I think sound/performance wise either will work great, but the 703 will be alot easier to work with. rockwool is pretty messy when you start cutting it up. you could always use 703 for the super chunks and roxul for the panels you wouldn't have to cut.
it wont be as cheap but it might save you some hassle and itching lol

The deeper the trap (6"+ chunk/panel), the more fluffier the material can be.
But if you have the money, denser stuff will be more effective and, yes, easier to work with.

That's me building a superchunk with Paroc eXtra (rockwool), about 3-40kg/m3.

well according to www.atsacoustics.com, roxul rockboard 60 is 6 lb. per square foot and 703 is 3 lb.

so denser should be better for the corners right?

Yes, if you can afford it. But if you're limited in budget, go with the thicker on panels and fluffier on the chunks, or whatever is the cheapest option. Otherwise I'd probably use the roxul everywhere, as it's denser. Rockwool is nicer to work with as well (less itchy).. :) Fluffier stuff need to be braced somehow so take that into consideration also.

BTW, highly recommended reading (for others reading this as well):

Not sure how things work in your neck of the woods, but I suspect that you could get rockwool/703 cheapar than from ATS acoustics if you just look around. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/bass-traps-acoustic-panels-foam-etc/402618-looking-owens-corning-703-a.html

word up. thanks! I'm gonna be figuring out my placement in the next day or two so I'll have to post here so some people can double check it for me.

I can't say for sure as none of those products are available in any practical capacity here in Oz.

But bear in mind that you start to get diminishing returns if you make your superchunks too dense. Something like 703 should do fine in the corners, and even rockwool that's in the realm of 48kg/m3. As said, you can afford to go fluffier in the corners.

Make sure your upright/panel traps are rigid material like 703 or 705 though, because you don't want to be fucking around trying to keep them intact/upright. It's annoying enough as is to make panels.

yeah I'm DEFINITELY going with the 703 for the panels, I was just wondering if I can get away with that roxul board for the corners cause it's cheaper, and the extra density couldn't hurt, right?

Density between Rockwool and Fibreglass is relative. I don't recall this well because my acoustics-knowledge-thirst days are somewhat behind me, but I think I read someone saying that 48kg/m3 fibreglass is roughly equivalent to 96kg/m3 rockwool.

But generally lesser density in the corners is fine. As I said, you hit a point of diminishing returns, and after a while if you keep going denser, the material will actually start to reject sound and you will be shooting yourself in the foot. The density where that starts to happen is unknown to me though.
