any suggestions on best Rush albums?

I only have Moving Pictures and it is really good! (anyone else notices the Meshuggah resemblence at the beginning of the third song??)

That album is in my car cd player right now, kick ass album. I am also pretty new to Rush so I havent heard alot of their stuff. But you should get 2112, which is way up there along with my all time favorite albums, and Fly by night, also pretty good

2112 could have been a great album... if they had made it an instrumental. Can't stand the the lyrics or the vocals on that one.

Unlike wdiv I will recommend "2112" above all. It's the most metal and heaviest Rush album IMO, and also my all-time favorite. In general terms I will say from my own experience:

1) "2112"
2) "A Farewell To Kings"
3) "Hemispheres"
4) "Signals"
6) "Caress Of Steel"
7) "Permament Waves"
8) "Fly By Night"
9) "Grace Under Pressure"
10) "Counterparts"
11) "Test For Echo"

I don't like/care for the rest of the material, but I must also recommend "Exit Stage...Left" for a live one.

Wyvern's list is almost perfect. Add All the Worlds a Stage, First live album in there at about #9 and there you have it.

The first three are like the Holy Trinity of Rush Music!

Just treat yourself and go buy every single Rush CD there is cos every one of them is a total masterpiece. I'm a total hardcore Rush fan and think they are the best band on the planet bar none. And Wyvern's list is pretty good to start with plus you must get All The Worlds A Stage which is total class. Maybe you should just wait for a week or two and buy the 30th Anniversary Tour DVD/CD which will be mindblowing. Seeing Rush last September for the 4th time was the best night of my life - they were totally awesome - what a sensational concert that was. I already had a copy of the first night of the tour done in Nashville and just knowing in advance what songs Rush were going to be doing was brilliant and I don't think they could have picked a better selection of songs. Obviously when they did 2112 that very near brought the roof down and Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Working Man, Spirit, Limelight etc., all those songs were blistering but I was very nearly in tears when they played Dreamline and Animate, they were just so incredible, and they weren't any of my fav Rush songs before the concert.

Hi and thanks for the welcome Hawk. I'm liking it here already, talking about Rush and nwobhm bands - my 2 favourite subjects - well in fact that's about all I ever really talk about. Are you called Hawk cos you like Hawkwind. I love Hawkwind, only managed to see them once though at Glasgow Apollo and they were tremendous.

Nope it has nothing to so with Hawkwind. :p

As for Rush, I discovered them in late December of 1976 and bought "Fly by Night" in very early '77, incidently on the same day as "Light Out" from UFO! And I been a Rush fan since. Although I like the albums up tot "Hold Your Fire" a lot better than what came after that. My favorite album is "Power Windows" then "A Farewell to Kings", "Hemispheres", " 2112", "Moving Pictures" and "Fly by Night".

I am looking forward to their new DVD!! :headbang:

I really like Rush. I suggest 2112, then Moving Pictures, then Hemispheres then A Farewell to Kings.

Some Rush fans forget how good "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" are because they are overplayed on classic rock radio.

If you've not heard that much Rush, Vapor Trails might take a few listens before you get into it but you should buy it for no other reason than EARTHSHINE is on it, and that is absolutely tremendous. It's a Rush album and I just love everything Rush do, so I'm slightly biased I suppose but I think its brill, Secret Touch, One Little Victory and Ghost Rider all excellent.

The Rush 30th Anniversary DVD I was talking about, I think it's actually out now, I've not got it yet but here's what you get and it is some package. Check this out, its mindblowing. I'll need to order it from Amazon asap as you get DVD plus 2 live CDs, same set list as the live DVD.

thanks all!
what about later albums like "Vapor Trails" ?

Vapor Trails is an absultely brilliant album and is among the bands top 5 releases, IMO. Sure, the sound/production/songwriting style is different from days past, but the songs are all phenomenal.

At once, Vapor Trails is modern, heavy-as-hell, a nod to the past, groove-infected, emotional, trend-setting, no-frills, and pure magic.
It's that great of an album!

I'm relatively new to Rush myself. I've known the "hits" for years and have had the "Chronicles" collection since it about 1994. But only this year did I finally give their albums a chance (not sure what I waited for?!?!). Anyway, they have quickly become one of my fav bands. Every release from 2112 to Signals is, IMO, essential/mandatory. The next batch of releases are all strong in their own right (Grace Under Pressure - Roll the Bones), each containing a handful of classic gems, but also suffering from too much filler. The final, and current, Rush era began (as I see it) with Counterparts. The songs rock harded, there's less 'fluff'.

anyway, I just picked up the Rush in Rio DVD and am blown away. Watching Neil Peart perform his magic is a real treat. Easily one of the best concert DVDs I've seen.

Yes I meant to mention the Rush in Rio DVD, it really is mindblowing, so get that DVD as well. And definitely my fav concert DVD as well, although the new Pink Floyd Pulse one looks a belter and I should be getting it any day now since I won it in a competition:D :D
