same mic placement for L/R guitar tones?

doesn't work like that - you're massively overthinking it.

have one amp with mids on 1 and another with mids on 7. i promise you it will sound bad.

You aren't wrong Bryan, it's just it's easier to get a balanced mix with the same tone. There is nothing wrong with two tone but it requires a bit more diligence in both tracking and mix to get them to feel balanced (in a metal mix, you can get away w/ different things in different styles).
