great when he was solo. a couple of good albums in the 70's, 3 great albums in the 80's and 3 great albums since he originally left van halen. discuss

Great with Montrose too! I actually hear a lot of Sammy these days, thanks to my two concert DVDs, which are a blast to watch. The band he has compiled in recent years are just in it for the fun, and that's very apparent when you're watching these concerts. It's just one big tequila party! And watching them, it reminds one of just how many great songs Sammy contributed to rock and roll over the years.

Agree, my fave as well.

It is followed a close second(in regards to his solo albums) by 'Three Lock Box' with one of my fave SH songs - 'Remember the Heroes' a duet with Mike Reno from Loverboy. 'Danger Zone', which preceeded 'Standing Hampton', is also a damn fine album and was a prelude to what would come with 'Standing Hampton'.

HSAS - 'Through the Fire' is great as well. 'Animation, Valley of the Kings and Giza' trilogy is worth the price of admission alone.

Montrose - s/t (A true classic)
Hagar - Nine on a Ten Scale ( I saw Sammy open for
Montose before this LP came out) "Silver Lights"
"Urban Guerilla" & "Young Girl Blues"
HSAS - I still have a poster of this hanging in my music
room. Was at the show in S.J. (2 bad they only did
one album)

Essential Hagar according to me;
Marching To Mars...
Not 4 Sale...

Montrose self-titled album...
Standing Hampton...

i agree 100%. the album not 4 sale is so underrated and too bad its out of print and got no attention but i'd add:
three lock box
ten13
musical chairs

stay away from
red voodoo (corny)
i never said goodbye (doesn't rock, too many ballads)
livin' it up (too jimmy buffet)

i wish he never joined van halen to be honest. he was going in the right direction in his solo career and was gaining momentum after VOA which is also pretty good

I only own one Sammy Hagar solo album and that's Red Voodoo, a very fun album to listen to. I really do need to get more of Sammy's solo stuff but hadn't known where to start but this thread sure helps.

yikes :puke: red voodoo is the last album i would tell anyone to get as a first sammy album. get the essential red collection first that way you get a good overview of his entire career even though its horribly flawed and missing a lot of his well known songs and lower charting hits (three lock box, i don't need love, serious juju, let sally drive, baby's on fire, shag, buying my way to heaven, voa, hands and knees, basically all his 70's hits) just to name a few

I have to say that I love his cover of the Toby Keith song "I Love this Bar."

i like a few sogs on that album but for the average sammy fan i wouldn't reccomend it. i went back and listened to not 4 sale tonight and that album is sooooooo good its not even funny. too bad the company he was with dropped the ball and sammy basically deceided not to promote it and instead released that live album. no wonder it was sammy's lowest charting studio album since the 70's and went out of print not too long after being released which is a shame because its easily his best since the 80s. i also listened to red voodoo again and its still bad. lyrics are cheesy. the only few good songs are like the last 4

I disagree on Red Voodoo. It's got atleast two awesome songs on it, which are Returning of the wish and Lay your hand on me. The latter is my fave. :headbang:

We need more Hagar solo discussion.

Standing Hampton is great but I'm a sucker for my old cassettes of Cruisin' and Boozin', mixin up the best of the red rocker. Always enjoyed him as a solo artist and defo with Montrose. I have to admit it took me a while to enjoy him with VH...but eventually warmed up to it.

I said for years "Sammys the reigning King of Rock 'n Roll", been a fan since '73. I've always liked the way he goes after a vocal.

Sorry to hear about Not 4 Sale, I loved that CD and misplaced it. I have a really nice.... case........

I also love my VanHalen Hagar albums and tapes. I'll never figure out peoples problem with that, but whatever.
