Scar Symmetry ripping SYL off?

That's really not that similar. I see what you're all getting at, but it's definitely not a straight rip off and also likely not intentional. And I agree that Strapping trumps Scar Symmetry any day...

Basically that's all been said already so I just contributed nothing to this thread, haha.

This reminds me of the whole Joe Satriani's "If I could fly" vs. Coldplay's "Viva la vida" plagiarism controversy.

The Scar Symmetry song HU does sound similar to Shine... but I don't think it's as blatantly obvious or "stolen" as is the example I just mentioned.

I also agree with Shane....
I've also had major bands "steal" my riffs. I wrote a riff in 1997 that was almost exactly what Pantera would later record as "Revolution Is My Name," for example. Of course, there's no way Dimebag ever heard my riff, since I was pretty much just a bedroom jamming guitarist in those days - these ideas just float through the collective unconsciousness, I figure whoever records them first wins. :)

I was thinking that EXACT same thing the other day when I heard the new Pestilence. I "wrote" their main riff for their song "Synthetic Grotesque back" when I was in my junior college years. LOL. I do think these ideas do just float around, and "whoever records them first wins".

Man.. what a crazy universe.

I'm with aaron that this isn't that similar....at least no more similar than falls into the normal acceptable range.
Now lets round up all the bands with riffs that are just staccato 8th note syncopations with lots of rests on the open e string (or d,c, b, a whatever). Then lets figure out who to give credit to.

I don't think it's even sane to compare that to anyone ripping anyone off. Those are just basic chords, they're used all the time, it's the foundation of the music. It's like saying someone can't use a straight up 4/4 rock beat (Kick, Snare, Kick, Snare) because it's used already.

To rip something off should have some requirements, as in melodies, interesting rhythmic timings and whatever. Anyone can use those 4 chords and make something pretty cool and unique out of it... well, until a certain point atleast.
