The purpose of an album review is to give an indication of whether that album is worthy of being purchased. The best reviews are those that cause new understanding of an album to those who already obsessively listen to it. They defeat the criticism of 'why should I read reviews if I can just listen to the album myself?' by exploring enough details and being a thorough discussion of an album rather than a summary opinion.

I think that is pretty simple and straightforward. But of course in the world of heavy metal things can never be simple and straightforward. There is too much bullshit clouding both the concept and execution of effective record reviews. How do we shovel it off somewhere and never have to deal with it again?
