Sepultura-Roots-clipping?

I have recently listened to Rotts by Sepultura after a loooong time: in these years my ears improved a lot and I did find a really annoying thing about this album: it's full of clipping!

Is it just me or didi you noticed this too?

Well... ...of course! A lot of energy and a great performance overall but it's like a beautiful girl with a lot of body hair everywhere... ..still appealing but if she could get rid of the fur...

No metal I know, but if any of you could get their hands on a copy of the new Hard-Fi DVD called "In Operation" it'd be cool if you'd tell me, what the problems with the sound are on this one. To my ears it's either the snare or the kick that clip (almost all the time) but I'm not half as much a pro as you are so I might be totally wrong and would love to find out what's really wrong with it!

The clipping is there on purpose. Neve 80 series and 2". That's what you do with that setup.

I hope you're Ironic, since the amount of clipping on this album it's just... ...aaaaarrrggghhh.

Anyway, didn't tape clipping supposed to be more 'warm'?
Maybe it's just master to CD fault.

I haven't listened to the record in a long while but wasn't it mixed by AW and mastered by Marino? Those guys don't really fuck up so I've got to imagine there is some intentionality there.

A lot of engineers/producers crank Neve pres to clip a little and also hit the tape really hard, because shit sounds waaaaaay more ballsy that way. It's kind of a trade-off. I like the way it sounds. There are a shitload of records with that same thing going on. Pretty much anything produced by Ross Robinson in the 90's does.

And like Egan said, the guys who worked on that album are some of the best in the business. You don't really think that you're hearing something that they didn't, do you?

I am not saying it is a bad thing when done in taste. It does sound good but for the educated ear you really notice a little to much.

It really depends on the person. I am not claming my ears are great. As a matter of fact I am just starting to be able to listen to things and make educated guessing as to what actually happened to capture that sound. For me it is never ended cycle. There I times were I just over analyze things and there I times were I am able to sit back and let the music take over.
