Hi,

Is anyone here running SP3 on XP with your DAW? I keep getting the windows update reminder and will update to SP3 if i don't hear any horror stories for you guys...Thanks alot for any input

Been running SP3 since it was released. No problems at all with RME Fireface 400 and Cubase SX 3.

You can create problems if you install SP3 on top of a previously installed SP2/SP1/Vanilla. It is always recommended you slipstream the SP3 update into a new install CD and do a fresh installation with the slipstreamed CD. Here's a guide for SP2, but the same steps apply for SP3 too: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

Yeah, it's never a fact with windows if you just go and update stuff :p I've been managing alot of servers from company's now... and I stick to what is working, works and needs no upgrade. Al nescesary updates like security updates are tested on a test server with the image of the one i'll be working on. So especially on a DAW i would just go with what you have. If it works, it works. And if you wanna have the advantage of the quicker sp3(That''s what they said when it wuz released, doubt it though) Just go with what Torniojaws said.

I've been working with PC's for about 6 years now, spent 2 years fixing/building laptops. And I've been building/installing PC's for 12+ years. I installed SP3 over the top of my existing SP2 install, not one problem as long as I had SP3 compatible drivers. There was problems when SP3 first came out, where it would fuck up some peoples installs (my friend had it where he had to do a full reinstall of Windows). But as far as I'm aware the version Windows Update is distributing currently has no problems at all.

And JJO, I think the same way about testing updates, etc in a server environment, but I don't think it's as critical to a standalone user. But then again, I'm also not too bothered if I lose everything on my PC and have to start from fresh reinstalling, but that's because I've done it probably in excess of 1000 times over the years.

SP3 has fixed alot of memoryleaks and stuff, and I tried it out for a few weeks and it was fast as hell!
Still I returned to Vista(Because I want to be able to play DX10 games.). >,<

Yep, running SP3 with my Mackie Onyx Satellite (not an interface known for its good drivers, but I haven't had any problems) and Reaper with zero issues!

I had it hang on installation and completley bone my windows install. Not even replacing registry through the recovery console or anything worked. Formatted (I have a system only partition for this reason). Slipstreamed it into my install cd and it works a charm, except it had been months and m-audio still hadn't updated the current drivers to work on sp3. The older version I had worked first go...go figure

No problems here either.I downloaded the SP3 CD image file, burned it off and installed it on both my XP PC's back in May.One was over SP2 and the other was over SP1a.

When it was released, I waited for a month or so before installing it. Zero problems on both of my computers. I just installed it from Windows update. The only Service Pack I've needed to slipstream was SP1, as a normal install made my old pc all fucked up.

Does anybody know if the ram limit still exists in sp3?

Yes, but it's because it's 32-bit, and as such the limit is a physical one. 32-bit systems can only address a total of 2^32 bytes (4 GB) of memory, and that includes video card memory and add-on card memory. RAM is lowest on the foodchain, so the other devices' needs are taken from maximum RAM amount (usually 4 GB is seen between 2.7 GB to 3.5 GB). If you want to use more than that, you need a 64-bit CPU and a 64-bit OS (and naturally 64-bit drivers for it). The technical limit for 64-bit systems is 2^64 bytes (18 exabytes, or about 18 billion GB), but the limit is once again a hardware one with current devices. Most desktop systems are limited to 16 GB.

Just reformatted, and aside from the Mbox (that's right) causing constant BSODs upon boot, my 3rd attempt actually worked with a slip-streamed version of SP3. The moral of the story? SP3 should be fine for most people, and Digidesign still suck hard.

Shame about 32-bit systems. It's been such a slow move over on the PC, and it almost seems like we'll never quite get there.

Installed SP3 today and the recommended fix for AMD cpus.....All seems fine. Thanks everyone for your replies!!!
