Big thanks to Chris for getting me onto this record. I had thought being some of Ben's older work it wouldn't be so good, but on the contrary it's actually a decent reference record.

The guitars are so dull that the vocals can't help but sit in the mix marvelously. They are a lot brighter than just about anything else, other than the cymbals, so it creates a really cool degree of separation. Low-end is a little muddy... but you can get away with it in the genre.

Check the tracks 'Shine' and 'Beautiful' for good examples of the mix work!

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't Chris work on this album to some extent? or at least with Sevendust/Grosse, maybe not at the same time though.

I think Grosse generally has the low-end mud thing going on to a certain extent, but it totally works with his style. Love it.

what do you guys consider "low end mud"?
i actually love korns low end rumble, all the new metal stuff back than was pretty bass heavy.
modern production seems to just sculpt out everything from 100 to 300 hz...

still animosity is one of my favortie records from tthat time, not really mix wise though.
i must admit that these mixes are indeed a little muddy (not really cla-ish) , but still
they do have this impact - i mean listen to rumble fish (was that animosity?)
its muddy, but it always makes me go : dededemmm dededemm dededemmm... baaaamm!!! :)

I did work for Ben, but it was strictly as a runner and it was after this record. I was being trained as an assistant when I got a better job elsewhere. Having said that though, I thank Ben every day for letting me use the SSL in the B room every day it wasn't booked. I learned more in that 8 months then I did at any other point in my career.

While I don't know alot about this record, I can tell you that Ben had a Diezel VH4 and matching cabinet that he used on every single record I saw him record, so I assume it appeared on that record for the heavies.

He also used a cool micing technique which I've never been able to mimic properly....

2 57s in kind of a fredmann style but slightly modified, with a coles 4038 about 2 feet back. All blended together.

Ben also uses(d) an empirical labs fatso for his parallel drum compression...

Love the production. Very punchy with a nice low end. The intro-riff to Shine kicks my ass every time.

Fuck just listening to Beautiful for the first time in a long time. The guitars/bass mix is just crushing. I would guess Recto for guitars?

Dave Fortman do some similar guitar tone. And some of you probably already hear about typical amp/cab for this kind of band. So my gest is modded JCM800 and rectifier through an older mesa cab. 2 sm57 through neve pre. Or a blend of VH4 (as Chris say) and marshall. Only supposition btw.
