Shade Empire – Essence Of Pain
Self released – Demo – 2002
By Russell Garwood

Shade Empire hail from Finland and "Essence Of Pain" is their third demo. Comprising three tracks, the CD showcases a unique style of black metal, in which caustic guitars and harsh screams are juxtaposed by well integrated, melodic symphonics that occasionally add an industrial tinge. Sporadically, programmed drums and scratching betray dance leanings, and instrumental passages provide respite from the largely metal-based sound.

The non-programmed drums complement fast, aggressive yet slightly melodic guitars and witch vox well, while bass is slightly less apparent under a barrage of impenetrable instrumentation. Sung bursts and keyboards add a dramatic feel, and multiple lines of melody range from lush piano breaks to graceful violins. But don’t let this fool you; underneath there is a constant metallic assault on your senses utilising extremity to contrast the more melodic elements.

Having heard this well-produced and professional demo it comes as no surprise that the band have recently signed with Avantgarde Music. I would, however, prefer "Essence Of Pain" to be longer - the three hugely energetic songs rush by in an incomprehensible blur, leaving you bewildered yet wishing for more. I look forward to hearing Shade Empire’s debut album.
