In a recent episode of Billy Corgan’s new podcast, “The Magnificent Others”, the The Smashing Pumpkins frontman sat down with Sharon Osbourne – manager extraordinaire, TV personality, and the formidable force behind Ozzy Osbourne’s enduring career.
In an excerpt from the interview, transcribed by Ultimate Guitar, Sharon looked back on the many issues Black Sabbath had with their former management, noting how they suffered the very fate they thought they’d have with her father, notorious music impresario Don Arden.
After Black Sabbath released their self-titled debut in 1970, it didn’t take the industry heads long to realize the potential of the four shabby-looking Birmingham rockers. “There was all the talk in the office [about] this band called Black Sabbath… Nobody’s heard music like that”, Sharon, who had been working as a receptionist for her father at the time, recalled.
According to Sharon, Arden – whose unconventional business methods had earned him nicknames like the “English Godfather” or the “Al Capone of Pop” – wasted no time in getting to the band, and had sent an associate to bring them to his office the day after their first London gig:
“My father sent his chauffeur, who was a very interesting person, and he was also his bodyguard. He was involved with the craze, and he had a checkered past, you could say, this gentleman. He went to the hotel, picked them up, and brought them to my father’s office. It was the first time they’d ever been in a Rolls Royce; my father knew how to put it on, impress.
“So, they came to our offices, which were in Mayfair in London. And I they come in, they sit in reception, there am I, and they’re all sat on the floor. They wouldn’t sit in seats, they had to sit on the floor. And I’m like, ‘What the **** is going on?’ I’m just taking my calls, trying not to have eye contact with anyone. And then I showed them into my father’s office.”
