Sirius

I have sirius on my Dish at home. Pretty cool. They have pretty good metal chanel and a chanel dedicated to 80's metal/rock. What suprised me the most is the all Elvis station...Anyway, it's pretty cool.

I know the majority of Metal fans have moved away from Radio in recent years. There is Z Rock, but I think these music channels are pretty good, as they tend to mix it up a bit. The sports programing can't be touched...

Ya, alot of sports fans really seem to dig the XM and Sirius radio. I'm not really a sports guy myself so I can't say I really get as much out of the satelite radio as I could.

Anyone made or making the move to statellite radio?
I have XM on my Dish at home, but since Stern is making the move and his series ends on this week. I picked up a Sirius receiver with some B-Day money along with a number of cd's from Best Buy...

First off, Happy Birthday!

We had Sirius for a little over a year but let the subscription die this Summer. It's pretty cool but just wasn't worth the added expense. I was hoping for them to play more out of the way tracks rather than just the popular ones. And they fall into the same old trap that all radio does -- playlists. We listened to it a couple days in a row while we were painting the house and you could just about tell what time it was by what track they were playing. That's my main gripe with all radio. Since they don't have commercials they have a ton more air time to play more tracks. I would have thought they would have dug a little deeper.

The variety of stuff that they have on there is pretty cool. We played the blues channel quite a bit and enjoyed that one the most of all. My wife likes the early rock so we listened to the 50s and 60s channels quite a bit too. Other than that, I listened to Hard Attack a fair bit. They have quite a bit of Death vox on that and it's fairly extreme so it's not one that I stayed on for long periods of time. And then there's Hair Nation which was a lot of 80s hair metal. Pretty cool, that one.

I was surprised at the reception. We can have problems getting AM stations when we go up into the mountains and through canyons. Never had a problem with Sirius.

Been thinking of getting Sirius for a while now. Don't really want to spend the money on it, but radio is going to go the way of television I'm afraid. Who doesn't have cable? With Stern coming on and Bubba the Love Sponge (he was the DJ that got fired down here in Tampa after the FCC crack down) being on his station as well may be enough for me to at least try it. Plus I've heard Hard Attack and it's alright.

Eh, not for me. I don't like having someone else tell me what I'm going to hear next. From what I've heard, these stations still play the same crap that our FM radio does, albeit with no commercials. When they start delving deep into b-sides or have a channel that plays bands like Lefay, Tad Morose, Cage, Astral Doors, and Mob Rules...then I'm not wasting my money on it.

Their specialized channels are pretty cool, like all Elvis or Beatles, but I'm mostly interested in the metal end of things. And in that category, they just play the same ol' same ol'.

At least network television has some amount of worthwhile programming! Musically, radio's been dead for years (unless you're a Top 40 fan). It's just going to keep get worse with all of the conglomeration that's going on (ClearChannel, etc), which ensure that nothing other than the market-tested top 40 songs will ever hit the airwaves. It's really pretty disgusting to me, and I refuse to listen to the "Rock" station in my area. How many times a day do I have to listen to the latest frickin' Nickleback single or System of a Down single or whatever the flavor of the month is? For older songs, you never hear any deep cuts... just whatever the big hits were. It's sick.
Radio has a couple of call-in shows that I'll listen to, and some sports, but otherwise.... blah.

I'll be honest THE ONLY reason I'm trying this SIRUIS thing out is because Howard Stern is moving... He's only been in The Portland market since 1997 and I'm hooked...
Not on the sleazy shit, but on the no holds barred interviews he does with his guests. He did a fantastic job interviewing of all people Billy Gibbons a couple of months ago....
I agree with Savaron, Radio is going the way of TV...
You'll have to pay for the good shit....
I'm not talking about the music end of things either.
Talk radio, Sports radio, I can sit here and gripe about how radio is dead and how it's commercial crap, ect. But isn't that attitude just elitist?!
Think about it....

I've had XM for about 15 months and I love it. The metal channel is awesome and they also have MLB and the NHL, my 2 favorite sports.

I gave up on Stern a long time ago mainly because he's just not funny anymore. He also got rid of all the talent he had (Jackie, Billy West, etc.). I do support Richard Christy though. I'd say I haven't listened to Stern on any type of a regular basis since the late 80's.

Opie and Anthony are where it's at, and they're on XM.

Meh, Opie and that other knucklehead make Mark and Brian seem like rocket scientists! I mainy like Stern these days for his ability to interview people, he asks stuff the average person would ask. Like when he interviewed Paul MaCartny(sp?). I'm not a Beatles fan, but he asked stuff that hasn't been asked before, he didn't disrespect the guy it was a great interview. The same with the recent appearance with Billy Gibbons, great interview! Richard Christy is a sham. He's not very good at comedy and I actaully cahnge the dial when he's on, all he talks about is his porn collection. And that dumb Oklahoma accent? Very Hillbilly!
Don't Listen to Stern, it's your right.

I am so with you on this one. I have tried to listen to every special metal 'station' and have never been too impressed. I have tried every online station, every cable radio thing, the statellite radio thing, and I have never been too impressed. All of them only ever have two or three metal stations tops and they all grab for the trends. One glam, one 'extreme' metal station, and a mallcore/rapcore/metalcore station. Where is my power/prog/thrash station? That is when I will sign up!

not trying to convince you or anything, but this really isnt true. The metal channel on XM does play deep tracks. For example, I've heard every track on The Warning on it at one time or another. I just heard Child of Fire a few hours ago. They still have a long way to go as far expanding into other genres of metal, but it's not like they're playing Cum On Feel The Noize every two hours.

Their Music Lab channel - while not a fav of mine - also is very good. Everything from Dream Theater to TSO to Porcupine Tree to Spock's Beard to King Crimson to Yes, etc... Tons of prog rock, even the 20+ minute songs!

Even the "classic rock" channel is 1000 times better than any city's "home of rock and roll." Much less repitition, and far more diversity.

Sixx: I have no idea who Mark and Brian are. O & A are great. Funny F'n dudes....
