skills

I think John Myung is the main reason I like DT. Before I saw him playing on the SFAM dvd I have never seen a bass being played with THAT much technicality, I mean I have seen some skillful bass playing like Miller, LePond, and some from other bands, just never seen a bass being played as technical as a guitar can be played. Although Myung seems so to himself and I have heard he is quite arrogant and doesn't participate in socializing with fans as much as the other bandmembers.

OMG! A member of Dream Theater is arrogant? No way!

They were all pretty arrogant when I met them. I've seen them two times, and the second time they never left the venue to even talk to the fans (but Fates Warning did because they're cool). Myung wasn't THAT arrogant when I met him...just real quiet. Rudess was pretty cool (probably the least stuck-up), while Portnoy and LaBrie were nice, but they still had that aura of arrogance surrounding them. And Petrucci...he never even came of the bus (at several shows, I hear) to talk to ANYONE.

I like Dream Theater's music, but for the most part I can't help but feel that they're snobs.

As far as pure technique goes, Myung is probably one of the best bass players there is. And the best thing is that he knows when to hold back! VERY important!
However, his tone and style on the last two DT albums doesn´t appeal to me THAT much anymore, I absolutely loved his style on I&W and Awake! Miller on the other hand is among my favourite bassists as far as style and sound is concerned (my favourite bassist is Enchant´s Ed Platt, but I assume very few people here know him).

Myung is NOT one of the most technical bass players out there. And also NOT one of the best all-round bass players out there. He's just very good at fingerpicking - in other stuff like slapping he falls completely behind monsters like Bill Dickens and Vic Wooten. Myung's just not all-round in his technique. Furthermore, he lacks the most important aspect of a bass player: GROOVE. Myung only grooves bits and pieces on DT's Falling into infinity and Scenes from a memory - on the other albums this part in his playing lacks completely, and DT loses part of what otherwise could have been WAY more taste. Myung does fit in the band well, though - but just laying down a basic groove he does rarely.
For that, I'd prefer Sheehan or something.
For a technically versatile player, check out Sun Caged's Rob van der Loo. (www.suncaged.com; download the song Four Guilders), or www.robvanderloo.com).
The guy slaps, fingerpicks, grooves and taps his ass of on a seven-string bass, whilst still fitting in a band - friggin' great.
:OMG:
BTW - As for Miller, he fitted in SyX when he was there- but as a bass player he's nothing really special when compared to others - a very decent bass player though. I prefer LePond because of the Live album - very tasteful bass playing, just what SyX need.

who dat? anyway your signature rules

Jacko Pastorius was probably the biggest genius to ever play the bass. He was in a 70/80's jazz/fusion band called weather report, which i just got 2 cd's of. they're like the kings of the genre. He was incredibly fast, melodic and creative. he even said he was the worlds best bass player (don't forget he was an alchoholic when he said it) and i agree.

Victor wooten is also amazing!!! Vital Tech Tones rules.
Norberg from Spiral Architect, is also the most technical bass player i've heard in metal. A strong Jacko influence runs througout

And yeah, my new sig does rule. I just found it so funny.

Pastorius is indeed another one of the greats.
