No, not at all! Slayer and Metallica's only fault is forgetting how to write good music.
Am I the only one who thought Death Magnetic was really good? Not "classic Metallica" good, but still a monster of an album.

It's ok for what it was -- a multi-million dollar effort to try and prove "hey! we've still got the METAL in us!" -- but I just don't see the point in listening to something so average when there are so many great albums out now. Waste of time.

To sum things up, MetallicA sucks, Slayer sucks, you suck, I suck, everything sucks, music sucks, obey the guv'ment.
I still don't want to see 1/2 of Slayer. I didn't care for Slayer when Dave left the first time, certainly won't want to see them again this time.
As for MetallicA, I don't ever need to see or hear them again. Listened to them so fuckin much, the first four albums are pretty much part of my genetic makeup. I even have the drum parts memorized. The only reason I need MetallicA, is if I'm covering their songs with my old band.

You most certainly aren't! I loved the shit out of Death Magnetic. I will say that it was tough to get into because of the horrible production, but I still spin that one from time to time!

Unfortunately, I think the answer is "yes."
More unfortunately, it's the people *doing* the screwing. I'm not in a band, nor in the business, but it seems like a lot of people truly "in it for the music" (but who aren't shrewd business-people) get utterly screwed by people who may or may not care about the music, but are both shrewd and greedy.
You can blame folks like Lombardo for not negotiating a better contract, etc, and there's certainly validity to that. But greed is greed, and screwing someone unfairly is wrong.

I'd have to agree. I think the thing with Metallica is people are going to hate them no matter what they do. Was it their best? No. But to me it was a return to form, just not as good as their 80s stuff. And yes, the production wasn't good.

If there is going to be a debate about which band from that era is currently the best, or which has been the best contemporary band (last 20 years) I think the answer is Testament. While their high water mark was never as great as the other big 4 bands (aside from Anthrax) they have easily been the best band over the last 20 years. Low, The Gathering and The Formation of Damnation are far superior to just about any album put out by the Big 4 in the last 20 years (Last two Anthrax albums have been solid). Even their low point during this period (Demonic) is waaaay better than the other band's low points (Risk, Load, Divine Intervention, Diabolus in Musica, Volume 8, St. Anger). I would pay to see Testament play way before any of the big 4 bands if they all came around now.

I liked Death Magnetic as well (first album of them I enjoyed since 1991) but you're right that the production was very average. I still can't understand why a band with unlimited money like them doesn't care about sound quality...

Honestly, I think the problem is literally that they pay producers millions of dollars to select gear and recording space and recording engineers for them and then they just demand everyone do it their way, and it's been like that since St. Anger. The irony is that if DM had Load's production, it would have been phenomenal, but the band decided to just do whatever the hell it wants to do.

He's a hack. He probably didn't even touch Reign in Blood. Rick Rubin gets paid huge sums of money to hire out other engineers and other producers to do everything while he walks away and counts his money.
