Slurring notes

legato is very little picking (just enough to keep the volume ok) while running notes with your fret hand ....fine examples can be heard by Satriani, Eric Johnson, and even some of James' stuff...

try paying a simeple scale (G major or E min, for ex.) and just picking a few times, but letting your fret hand hit every note....I prefer this style, as it sounds smoother and less forceful than picking every note, though picking every note certainly does fit at the right moment..

Personally, I am a fan of picking just about every note. James and many others play legato very well, it's just not what I am into. And since I have only really studied IN DETAIL one guitarist, John Petrucci, I am a sucker for alternalte picking. His book and video "Rock Discipline" have both been a godsend to my once really shaky playing. It's helped my accuracy immensely, which in turn helped me play faster when i want to play fast.

About slurring notes: do you mean with the bar? Hitting the bar with the palm of your picking hand ala AGHORA/Steve Vai/Petrucci? That's a beautiful sounding technique, even though I don't use a bar on my guitars, haha!

See ya,

His guitar style is called "Articulated Slurring." it is a style
charecterized by its flowing and almost always flawess note to note vibrato. James started as a death metal guitarist and said he "thought that death metal solos were to boring and he wanted to add a more melodic style to it."

Remember saying this TestamentNut?

this old school back in the day usenet stuff hahaha :}

and I think you described it best. so there you go
