sm 57 to sm 7b mod

supposedly removing the transformer from the 57 smooths out the presence peak while lowering the output...making it closer to an SM7, but it'll never be the same as the mics have completely different capsules, cases, etc.

Yes, there is.

No, there isn't. I'm sorry, but no 'mod' is going to magically make a 57 sound like a 7.

Yes, I know about all the mods you can do. I'm not saying there aren't any mods. But saying they will make it sound like another mic is ludicrous. They have completely different components. Just look at the capsule, there is just no way you can make them sound like each other.

Unless you can 100 % prove to me other wise by providing sound samples and frequency response/pattern data sheets, I call total bullshit.

Carry on:)

And just to add, why on earth would you spend $300 total to mod a 57? Shit, you can get a used SM7b for that price.

First of all, no one ever said the upgraded transformer would make a 57 sound identical to an SM7. It makes the 57 sound closer to an SM7, which is what the OP was asking for. I can tell you from experience (because I own the SM7B and the 57, and used to own the Mercenary modded 57 in the link) that the Tab-transformer mod does indeed give the 57 smoother high end, a flatter midrange (less '57 bump') and a thicker low end. Like I said, it sounds close enough to the SM7 that if you already own an SM7 the Mercenary 57 is almost redundant.

Second of all, I don't know where you got $300 from. The mod is $80, or you can buy a pre-modded 57 for $190. Not bad for someone that wants something similar to the SM7 without spending the money.

All that said, the SM7B is still (in my opinion) the superior mic.

Thought it was 190 plus a 57. So I'll stand corrected on that.

I still think it's pointless, and a waste of money. Send me some clips of it compared with an SM7.

We had a long thread on this in the past, I believe Jbroll did some mods(maybe it was someone else). I thought it sounded like shit. But hey, to each their own. If you guys wanna go hacking up SM57's go right ahead, it's your life/money.

I dont see the problem. Its like having another possiblity, supposedly closer to the sm7 but still a little different, and cheaper.

Call it the "sm37" and dont compare it to the others, it will become another tool.

Ive heard people using it on cabs or snare.

I'm curious, is the mod easy ? Cause $80 seems a lot just for removing something even if it involves adaptation of the circuit
