I've basically got it narrowed down between those three mics to use as overheads (they would obviously be matched pairs in a spaced pair setup). What are your opinions on these mics? Which ones do you prefer?

If you have the money for SM81s or the modded mk012s it's no question you should just forget about the NT5s. The NT5s will be alright but the 81/12s would be a much better purchase, you won't really need to upgrade those for a long time.

Yeah, I sold my nt5's and got the modded 012's from oktavamod. I highly recommend them.
It's not that the nt5's are bad mics, the oktava's just sounded a bit more natural (less hyped/harsh in the high end), and had better dynamic response.

Ok, thanks alot guys, I was also leaning toward the MK-012s too.
But is the mod worth the extra $200? I havent heard comparisons of unmodded 012s and modded 012s.
