Smashing Pumpkins

For albums I recommend Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness, but if you prefer acoustics and softer voice then Siamese Dream...

personally i don't think they are that bad, Billy Corgan's voice is unique and I quite like it, but as a whole the band is probably the most overrated band of the 90's (with the exception of Nirvana)...

I love Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream (my copy of this was stolen / lost  ). Those two albums are quite amazing, not sure why I never bought any of their other stuff.

I personally like "Machina" the best. I just think it has the most interesting songs, I dont like it because it's supposed to be "the return to heavy metal!" or anything. Try to hear "Try, Try, Try," "Stand Inside Your Love," and "Wound." Mellon Collie is a second place runner up for me with Siamese Dream being in third, all 3 are classics in my collection and were one of the very first bands I really got into. In fact, I think i'll listen to Machina right after this...

Mellon Collie is a work of art. Definatly get that. Siamese Dream is also amazing.

But if you're starting off with them, I would recommend the Greatest Hits. Or if you aren't a greatest hits person (I normally am not, but I made an acception here for the second disk), get Mellon Collie

Okay, I have to admit that in my early teenage years, SP were my favorite band I posted on their message board and I listened to them every day.

In recent years, not being such a fanboy anymore and being able to look at them objectively, I don't see why everyone loves Mellon Collie so much. Its angsty theatrics are a little over the top, in my opinion. Sure, Siamese Dream has that too but it has an innocence and nostalgia to it that's uplifting. Mellon Collie just reminds me of bad sixth-grade poetry most of the time. It still has its moments though.

Here's how I rate them

Gish > Siamese Dream/Adore > The Aeroplane Flies High > Machina > Mellon Collie > Pisces Iscariot

Gish fucking owns musically. It's totally tripped out and psychadelic sounding and beautiful. The lyrics are really vague and don't really mean anything (even Corgan says this now). Siamese Dream and Adore hold the most sentimental value for me.

Gish is the shit. And SD is beyond words.

MCATIS is a tad overblown, and has quite a bit of filler, but is worth it for the good songs. The album has an epic scope and feels like a mystical adventure through a children's storybook or something. Not fantastical or LOTR-ish, but like Mother Goose or something. A nostalgic epic, if that works.

Yes. You are the only person on the planet who does not like the Smashing Pumpkins. This means you shall become ostracized from society, then in a swift yet drawn out move to seek revenge, shall become the first Leader of the Globe because you are so different, and shall create a world utopia where there is no racism, violence, or Tasmanians. After a good 30 year period of utter bliss, aliens from Uranus will take over, and you shall be sacrificied time and time again, because all the world's citizens will blame you for the eradication of weapons necessary to defend against the Uraniums. All this because you don't like the Smashing Pumpkins.
