Hi everyone,

I know this subject was beaten to death before, but I still think sometime it's good to go back to those kind of question for pick some idea.

So anyway, what your go to snare comp on insert?
On Mult?

Could be hardware or plugin. ;)

DBX 160VU

Haven't heard a really accurate software version, and I can't get the UAD one as I don't have a UAD system, but Dave Pensado once posted the Attack/ Release times so I usually try to emulate those with the Waves C1 or RenComp. Digi comp isn't bad either.

Works great in line or in parallel comp.

If anyone cares:

Attack times: variable, 15ms at 10dB, 5ms at 20dB, 3ms at 30dB
Release: variable as well 8ms for 1dB, 80ms for 10dB, 400ms for 50db

So I play with the ratio and release according to how much compression is desired. Gets close, but nothing quite like that smack of the hardware dbxs!

I use my Prime SSL HW compressor. Never got it to work as i wanted on the master so i tried it on snare a couple of months ago and after that i was hooked, give such nice smack so i can't mix without it

I like SSL Duende Channel Strip, but don't own it, so I just use ReaComp with about 20 ms Attack

When you say "at 10dB" are you talking about Gain Reduction or what?

FWIW, SKnote makes a dbx 165 emulation, that is probably pretty similar to a 160. I've been thinking about getting it. http://www.sknote.it/C165a.htm

And btw i had a DBX 160vu and i didnt like it. Totally destroyed my go-to-samples haha. Its like a compressor x10 going through 3limiters at once, even at the smallest GR haha

I like my DBX 160 xt, sounds great. I use it most of the time but if it's a time sensitive project or one where I need to bounce out a lot of different mixes I'll use software instead.

I use the audiocation compressor most of the time for software but I've been trying different things lately to see if I can get a more modern, in your face smack out of it.

Thanks guys, lot of great input.

1176 all butons pararrel , or distressor nuke hm, insert 1176 with 2A

I really like my DBX 163X/160X. In the box I like digi Smack and running a 1176 on the parallel bus.

I'm really late to the whole 1176 thing. Maybe because I'm not really a 1176 guy but never had so much luck with it on drum.
Need to experiment again.

Digicomp is great on mult for bring attack back.

I knew that:D
Agree with you for the 2bus duty Christian, the more I use it; the less I like it for be honest with you. So I tried it on snare mult as you "told me" to do...
Work good but I prefer a smart C1 instead.

(Btw guy, I have nothing again Prime, great stuff but my 4000e is really on the clean side, but not the kind of clean I want actually).

I like SSL Duende Channel Strip, but don't own it, so I just use ReaComp with about 20 ms Attack

Yes gain reduction...

Two quick notes for you Christian:

I agree for the whole 160 VU thing, really overrated imho....
Haven't found a place where I can use it.
On the other side that what I love my 160X! Can't me without...

I already told you this but don't expect to get an awesome result using a 160X/XT on insert and by itelf:D
You need to put it on mult, hit hard (8db GR at 4:1 for me) and eq what you lost back in.
Those bring the "knock" on drum.

That what everyone call NY style compression... That how it was used since the 80's (the mult approach).
But today, everyone do the same thing but with sample instead...

slate dragon

Haven't tried one but definitively put it on my need to buy list

MHCS or the Waves API 2500 comp.

I have Uad DBX,but i fall in love with great free MOLOT compressor/limiter in alpha mode/hard knee/8x oversampling for punchy snare.Stillwell Rocket is great also...

Will try those...

the sknote 165a is AMAZING on SNR... definitely an underrated plug IMO... I also like our CL7602 on drum para... which is essentially the same thing as the Prime IMO... bought it for the 2BUSS but NEVER got the results I was after; just too clean and not enough of the signature ssl 'smack' over an entire mix, but after trying it on my drum buss I was hooked.

Haven't messed around with it too much on JUST a snr mult but I can see it being fucking awesome for that. must try.

I'm currently using an FMR RNLA with the Log Release function enabled. Has a nice pop to it. Either that or CLA 1176, depending on what I'm going for.
