Snares sound crap on every record ever

IMO Don't focus too much on the snare (or kick or toms, or bass or guitars, etc) otherwise you will end up with a bad mix.
And for me the snare sound depends on each song/band. You can't use the same snare sound for all mixes.
Deftones snare is GREAT as is the AIC one but if you try to use Deftones snare on the AIC mix or the other way around it will make the mixes sound like crap.

Point is, you can make a snare, and an entire drumkit while we're at it sound incredibly tasty on record. Granted, it's hard to make drums sound so delightful in an extreme metal context, but off the top of my head, I can mention TBDM's Ritual for a very pleasant, even if a bit generic drum sound. And Ermin's works for larger than life f'n drums, ofcourse.

That's ear fatigue for sure! This happened to me a week ago. I've been mixing my bands album for so long that I lost my hearing of what a good snare sound is. We even published out single on Spotify and it has the old snare in the track... it literally sounds like a clap with no low end. :D Luckily I fixed that for the album version.

I think the general mistake is that people concentrate on the snare high end when it's really more about the low end and attack.

problem with mixing for too long is, that everything but the mix you´re hearing for the last hours will sound weird, at least that happens to me. best mix decisions are made in the morning in the first 5 minutes.

Man, I LOVE the snare on Ritual. it's nothing special, but it ROCKS! :)
