As I've warned before I am a real know nothing when it comes to recording.
Would someone be kind enough to post a clip? Totally raw no eq'ing on the board or compressing, so I know whether I'm even recording a decent sound.
Yes I am that clueless.
:goggly:

Well, I've never played a 5150, but I tracked down some settings that may or may not sound good. As for recording, I've had nothing but bad luck with miking (and I don't have any proper equipment for miking), so I record all my stuff direct. Remember, and this is very important, that in order to get a great sound, it MUST sound great at every step of production. It has to sound great in the room before it can sound great on "tape". There's no such thing as polishing a turd in recording. And read this thread carefully for further tips about mic positioning and such.

YOUZA! You can pretty much dial in your recorded tone by moving your 57 around the speaker cone. I don't use any compression, when tracking my guitar, but I do use eq. Everybody has different eq settings, so just trial and error. Use a pair of headphones while you move your mic around, or have someone else move the mic around the speaker cone, while you monitor it somehow. Start with the mic positioned in the middle, no more than an inch away from the cone, and move around from there. Double your tracks, and pan em hard left and hard right. Now your in business!

I just tried all of those settings - goddamn the Unearth ones sound good! Thanks!

Their settings are almost identical to mine - crazy... I'm gonna have to try the others when I get back to the rehearsal studio. Thanks for posting those, Ben!

Yeah, I just recorded with the Unearth settings and was blown away at how much cleaner and tighter they sounded than Andy's settings I was using before. I'm using a differnet cabinet, than Andy, though, so that'll change a ton. I'll post em tonight!

Hi Jeff i know you from the sevenstring.org forum, so what cabinet are you using? & are you still using the OD808 up front? If you are using the OD808 are the settings still the same or have you changed them?

Also i'd imagine the sound to be quite boomy cos' of there being so much low end & resonance, is this not the case?

Honestly, all the other settings were complete shit :(.

Here's the clip:

C-7 Hellraiser, 707 -> OD808 -> NS-2 -> 5150 -> Avatar 2x12 w/V30's -> SM57 -> Firepod. Slightly filtered on the extreme lows and extreme highs, as is the norm, and a small bit of C4. Bass was an Ibanez SDGR 5 String with EMG 40TW's into the Firepod, drums were DFHS with a drumagoged Sneap kick and snare.

I'm getting a Little Labs Redeye next week, and just placed an order for Mogami cabling and Neutrik plugs. I'm also going to pick up an i5 ASAP to try out, and will, as soon as possible, replace the cab with a Mesa.

Sounds great!
If you got the redeye you could clip all settings! :D
