So tell me about Wolverine

I would say so. They remind me of a trad. metal band playing progressive-style rock with lots of synth and digital stuff thrown in the mix. Some Tiamat and Anathema influence, good stuff. Cold Light of Monday is an album I need to spend a lot more time with, but when I have spun it I've highly enjoyed it.

Also, here be ze RC review that I think covers it pretty well.

Great band with an ep and two albums... all of which are quite different from each other. My favorite is their first full-length, "The Window Purpose"... which seems to be an amalgamation of the quirkiness and tortured lyricism of Pain of Salvation, the brooding atmospheres and sharp riffs of Evergrey and the dynamics of Opeth. There's also a bit of a retro-70's feel with the keyboards. Very nice album.

The latest, "Cold Light of Monday" is a much different album. It's much more in the "melancholic rock" vein, a la modern Anathema, Katatonia, Porcupine Tree. There's a few hiccups along the way, but overall it's a very nice album featuring lush textures, crystalline production and more concise songwriting . Sometimes dark lyrical subjects can be stunningly effective when placed in the most delicate music.

I'll just say that "The Window Purpose" reminds me more of Fates Warning and Dream Theater, rather than Evergrey or Opeth.
And "Cold Light Of Monday" a load more of Fates Warning's "APSOG", Pink Floyd and the most atmospheric moments of "Promised Land" rather than Katatonia or Anathema (what?)
I love this band, and cant really decide which album i like more, "The Window Purpose" or "Cold Light Of Monday". "Fervent Dream" is also very good, lil bit more rough and with more brutal vocals in it.

I agree entirely, particularly with the QR reference. I've spent a lot more time with 'Cold Light...', and I find it to be remarkable. It's very 'proggy' and yet it maintains a good sense of emotion, balance, and harmony.

I also don't get these references to Anathema. I don't hear any modern Anathema in Wolverine at all. Thank fuck.

I was referring specifically to Anathema's "A Fine Day To Exit" album. I feel "Cold Light" has some vague similarities in that they're both lush melancholic albums. But enough with the nitpicking. Everybody has their own set of ears and can hear whatever they want to.

Yes. Quite amazingly, it seems like we've got a general consensus here -- regardless of how you interpret Wolverine, everyone pretty much agrees that they rule supreme.

I also don't agree with those comparisons and fidn the album to be more unique and progressive than latter day Anathema. If you had to make a parallel to draw in curious listeners, I'd go with Pain of Salvation...especially in the way Stefan uses his voice as an instrument.

Cool thread ;)

The Window Purpose reissue is out this coming Monday in Europe. It's got a bonus track (a re-recording of the track "Again" from the Fervent Dream demo / EP) and it's been remastered (with a very significant overall improvement). New art too.
