soilwork drum rec

Yeah, you put one mic into the bassdrum, and one at the end of the tunnel, there you get a lot of subbass.
Also it's good against crosstalk in general.

those overheads seem really low

If you look on the right, there's one mic over the hi-hat, then two long booms going in towards the top of the snare - it's hard to see but my guess is one is actually under the splash at the front. And if you look on the left, there's one below the china, a pencil over the closed hats, and then another that looks like it's pointing at the ride. There's also a mic under the tiny splash in the centre. The two 'overheads' are exactly over the centre of the crashes, and like you say really close for overheads - so I think maybe each cymbal is individually mic'ed.

Also, if you were taking a photo of a big ass kit like that, you'd want to get the whole thing - but the bottom is cut off and the picture doesn't look cropped, which suggests to me it's just a small room. Putting it in the corner might just be to help get the ambient mics further away and make the room sound bigger.

but the end-result speaks for itself:)

Yup, it sounds like crap....

To be fair, the soilwork drums are some of the better drums done by bergstrand with this technique. I don't like the sound too much, but at least it's way better than what he's doing with In Flames....

Maybe the sound is bad because in flames has a bad drummer?
