thessaloniki 2003 live review from 'behind the veil2001'

I can't really express with words what the first Anathema albums mean to me and of course what most people don't knwo is that the main person responsible for them is Duncan Patterson. So, you can't imagine how I felt when I learned that he was coming for a live performance with his new band, Antimatter. The live started with some delay due to some problems. The music style of National Pornographic, the support band is something that I am not familiar with, but from what I know the band plays something close to PORTISHEAD and RADIOHEAD and fi I remember correctly a cover song from Smashing Pumpkins. The singer has a lovely voice and the whole band gave the impression that the band really works hard, but after them when Antimatter got up on stage I really fell chills down my spinal chord. Using only acoustic guiatrs and having a session member on the keyboards they played songs like "Saviour", "Psalms", "Over Your Shoulder", "The Last Laugh", some from their new album and some cover versions from ANATHEMA, Duncan's compositions of course, like "Lost Control", "Eternity Part III", "Empty", "Feel", "Destiny" and some other ones that I can't really recall right now. Their set's length was more than one and half hours with a small break of ten minutes and left as all, I believe, absolutely satisfied. A night I really don't think I'll forget that easy... Cheers and greatings to: Sophia (tyrosalata rules...hehe), Thanos (bonded by alcohol), Giannis and Thomas (the jackals), Dora (be strong babe...everything will end up fine) and of course Gianna (you're a goddess). The night would be different without you guys...

ANTIMATTER
to my ears is a combination of dark / gothic / doom / space rock and a times brings to mind such world-renowned artists such as PINK FLOYD, DAVID BOWIE and JEAN MICHAEL JARRE. The sounds that this incredible musical project bring to mind, are those of a movie soundtrack at times, as it features multiple synthesizers / samplers, beautiful musical soundscapes and luscious male and female vocals. The production on LIGHTS OUT is flawless and captures the essence of the material perfectly.

Recommended for fans of VIRGIN BLACK and longtime fans of ANTIMATTER and ANATHEMA.

Recommended Songs: All

Rating; (8/10)

The End Records is growing bigger and better everyday. They are mostly known for artists of a more mellow and ambient nature, and Antimatter is one band that fits their lineup to a T. They have a sound comparative to bands such as Ulver, Pink Floyd, Anathema, and even Portishead. Lights Out is their second album, and it contains eight songs totaling to just under an hours worth of pure euphoria that will make your head spin, but in a very good way.

Antimatter are dark, but they aren't too gothic or doom oriented. If I had to use one word to describe them it would be tranquil. The sound that they create is an amazing montage of intense electronic beats, space rock and amazing ambient vocals and lyrics, but the best part is that they are completely original.

Antimatter consists mainly of two members, Duncan Patterson (ex anathema
), and Mick Moss. The write and play all of the music, electronically and otherwise. They also have two female guests on the album that adds truly beautiful, melodic vocals that will send chills down your spine.

I think that every element of this album is perfectly put together. The songwriting, the production, and the cover art all deserve two thumbs up. This album is perfect if you love any of the bands mentioned above, and it is also perfect if you love music that is spacey, but simplistic and melodic. I strongly recommend this album, and if you like it I recommend that you check out the rest of what The End Records has to offer.

ANTIMATTER Saviour (11 tracks. 52:05) BLACK MARK/THE END RECORDS.

A nebulous album like this is one is hard to categorize beyond calling it dark, moody, electronic, and experimental. Perhaps I am just not familiar enough with this type of music to be able to describe it more accurately, but it borders on darkwave and industrial while maintaining elements of alternative. Like the post-modern framework that it exists in, there is a complexity of derivations here that identify it as art, if as nothing else. Now if that sounds like a lot of babble, so be it. Antimatter is mostly the work of Duncan Patterson and Michael Moss, but guest performers include Danny Cavenaugh, formerly a member of Anathema. It is too obscure and experimental to be alternative, but vocalist Michelle Richfield has a sultry voice like Gwen of No Doubt. What else can I say? It is haunting, emotional, and very intriguing.

ANTIMATTER - Saviour
2002 The End Records

"Aww, sweet nectah..." I always love it when I get something from The End. Antimatter is a relatively new project (1998) by Duncan Patterson (Anathema), and features a guest appearance by Danny Cavanagh (also, Anathema.) Vocals are handled by Patterson's close friend Michael Moss; Guest vocals by Michelle Richfield on tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, & 8; and Hayley Windsor on 5, 6, 7, & 9; and Jenny O'Connor on the bonus tracks. This album is pure nepenthe... Listening to it right now, I can already tell in a big-ass way that it is going to be my soundtrack this fall. It comes out of the speakers like gentle balm to the soul...caresses the brain with blunt, ether-soaked fingers, and lulls the consciousness into a beautiful numbness that could only be equated to the blissful state of vacancy experienced when under the influence of dental grade nitrous oxide. The promotional literature that came with the disc describes the sound on "Saviour" as "a sinister Portishead meets a more haunting Anathema." This is not a metal release; it is very ambient and brooding, experimental and electronically generated. The vocals are for the most part female, and very soft and haunting. Since I don't listen to any popular female artists, I am sorry I cannot compare these to anything else out there; but take my word for it, they are quality. Her voice sounds very insulated, and "smoky" if I may say so. "Over Your Shoulder" comes as a surprise, busting in with some heavy dance beat or something, which sort of annoyed me, but it is overlookable, for those like myself who don't dig that, for the sake of the whole recording. This album was recorded at Academy Studios in September 2000, and includes two bonus tracks, which are acoustic versions of "Over Your Shoulder," and "Flowers." This is one of the most gratifying albums I have received in a long while and I am going to be listening to it forever. It is the perfect companion to something like Rain Fell Within, and inspires a truly morose mood that is fitting for any cloudy day, or while reading something by Hermann Hesse. Just don't breathe too deeply. Adam Barrett

Also, I was quite shocked to find a thread all about peoples appreciation of 'Dream' in 'Seriously Off-topic' on UM. Its here ---

Actually, just looking through that forum there, theres a lot of flattering stuff about Antimatter. Another thread dedecated solely to Antimatter is where someone is asking for tracks like 'God Is Coming' to be recommended. Other stuff includes 'Lights Out' being mentioned a few times in a thread about your top albums of 2003, 'Over Your Shoulder' in a thread called 'Absolutely Beautiful Songs', and 'Expire' and 'Reality Clash' being mentioned in another thread. Time to dig out those long black coats and shades weve been saving

oh, well nevermind :) nice to hear you get some possitive reactions!

i hardly ever visit the other forums here, but maybe i'll check that one out later if i have the time.
