Crazy that this is a track from 1979.

Not to discredit bands like Metallica for essentially distilling their respective genres into something new, but this is why it bothers me whenever people point to any single band as the "first" of X genre. For every Metallica, you have a lot of other bands that were flirting with their given style years before. This is really interesting to me though, because if there were any album that could be credited for inventing a metal genre, I always thought that would be KEA. Not that it makes a huge difference, but it looks like it may have been released in 1980, but it may have been written and recorded before that. Awesome find though.

This whole album is awesome.

I think you're correct, and maybe it wasn't a good example. It's just that I have a pet peeve about people saying stuff like "X band is the first X genre band", and that track kind of supports that.

I didn't know Metallica were credited with inventing or being the first to do anything.
really? KEA is pretty widely considered the first thrash album no?

tbf though they were always upfront about repping the bands who influenced them. there were already thrashy riffs and moments here or there in the NWOBHM, metallica just distilled it into a more consistent sound. kinda like what candlemass did with sabbath, dispensing with the bluesy/rocky/proggy stuff and specifically leaning hard into the 'black sabbath' (the song) sound. or what sabbath did with the heavy psych/hard rock of the late '60s, for that matter.

Lars invented tape trading in the US when he was the only person who could get Euro releases because of his family back in Larsland.
