Do you think it is harder to write a 5 minute song or 2 two and a half minute songs? Or for example, a ten minute song or 5 2 minute songs? Cause this is compared to episodes, Is it harder to write 2 15 minute episodes for a show or one half hour episode? What do you think? Because maybe bands write 5 min songs because they can't think of 2 two and a half minute songs?

No, bands do not write longer songs because they can't think of two shorter songs. Some songs wind up being long and some short. Bands like Opeth prefer to keep all their songs long. Some bands, like Nile, have both long and short songs (Unas Slayer Of Gods clocks in at over 10:00). Other bands, like Pig Destroyer, Agorophobic Nosebleed, Nasum, and Abbadon Incarnate, like to have short songs. It's a matter of preference, and has nothing to do with ability. We've been through this before.

Yes but if you notice, most long songs have few riffs over and over again and shorter songs have more riffs in them. Look at Metallica on master of puppets and justice for all, those songs are long but they have very few riffs and they repeat them over and over again even though it doesn;t get boring. but for their short songs, it seems they have more riffs. This is why I brought up the question.

Also if you look at Arch Enemy's burning bridges, all songs are 3-5 mins long but 8 songs on the cd, anti-flag's a new kind of army songs are 2-6 mins long, 15 songs on the cd, why is this?

Simple. Anti-Flag had more songs written for their CD.

I think it's easier with longer songs - but don't quote me on this, it's different. But with longer songs, you're already have a concept in mind (like a motive, a chord progression, a melody, etc.) - and you're just stretching it to make it even longer.. Metallica used to do that a lot - and it backfired on their latest album (along with crappy lyrics, music, production, etc.).

But sometimes it just depends. If you listen to some Metallica songs from the 80s - they're so diverse and.. well, long for a reason. They could be broken into a lot of smaller songs.. Master of Puppets, Fade To Black, Welcome Home, ...And Justice For All, One... So it's always different..

Some bands like to go with shorter stuff - they take a smaller concept and stretch it out to make a short track - and thus can stay fairly productive.. ie Slayer, etc.

first off anti-flag sucks.

and another thing, although punk lp's sometimes have more songs they're often times shorter than metal lp's. for example, the masterpiece, "milo goes to college" by the descendents is only about half an hour long while there are about 15 songs.

but seriously, why does all this matter? both long and short songs can be good, records with both a lot of songs or few songs can be good. just get over it, good music is good music. stop looking for an explanation for it.
