The only tiny criticism I have is that some years it's sounded like singers were obviously singing into a microphone and it didn't come out clear like I would have expected. I don't know if that's about sound or singer technique though.
It depends. But most of the time it's singer technique. Too close to the mic...meaning lips directly on the windscreen...causes the resultant sound to come out "muffled" sounding. It is possible to compensate for this by using EQ, but that's a less than ideal solution. And then there's the good old gripping the microphone by the windscreen technique as seen in the following images...
It may look real angry metal cool and all. But it is the fast track to massive sound suckage. It blocks the ports on the back side of the mic diaphragm, thereby rendering the sound thin with almost no bass or lower mid-range. Think "1930's radio voice" sound. If that's the actual sound you're going for, then more power to ya. *shrug* Otherwise, the following rule applies.
