Yay for Shadow of the Colossus and a resounding yay for Blade Runner. Vangelis is awesome.

Here, help yourselves to some obvious choices:

The first one plays during one of my favourite scenes in all of video gaming, and the second... well... at least the track is awesome!

Edit: What, I started this thread now? Allright...

Okay, I refrained from the obvious like Star Wars or Blues Brothers.

But video games? I guess the thread doesn't say "MOVIE" explicitly, so I'll name a TV show: Game of Thrones.

And I'll name some video games too: Morrowind, Jade Empire, Xenosaga I,II,III, and FFX.

and the second... well... at least the track is awesome!

Lol, the ending is so bad and the song behind is so good. Well, at least the composer did his best, but maaaan.... So lazy, that ending.

SOTC soundtrack is a good pick.

Another videogame pick:

An obscure pick:

Recently heard:
The Senna (2010) film has an amazing soundtrack by Antonio Pinto, dare I say it made my eyes slightly more moist than usual?

And some obvious ones I can think of right away (don't need to link):
The Last of the Mohicans
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Lord of the Rings trilogy

FFX, Oblivion, Princess Mononoke, Zelda stuff, Gladiator, the second Pirates of the Caribbean. I would list the Avatar soundtrack, but I skip a lot of it, so no.

Only song I can think of, for comedy. That whole soundtrack^ is funny.

I can't really get into soundtracks - gotta have the music for its own sake.

That dreadful battle music that stays the same for the entire goddamned game is the demise of that soundtrack. It's still irrevocably carved into my brain and I still utterly loathe it.

Yeah, and at least it resulted in one the funniest fan gags ever. A bunch of people sent Bioware about 400 cupcakes, some of which were green, some blue and some red, but they all tasted the same.

It's not that bad! Haha but it's not something I'd want to listen to by choice, so I always skip it.

There are some great ones there that I will definitely check out so, allow me to post some more:

The whole The Lost World and Jurassic Park soundtracks. I can't argue with John Williams and I have weakness for music that reminds me of lost worlds, ancient forests, etc:

And, of course:

Lord of the Rings and Star Wars are obvious ones as well.

And on a more 'traditional song' way, but still instrumental:

^This guy also had an amazing Megaman X medley but it must have been taken out.

Indeed, it's hard to name any oldschool video games just because while the scoring could be memorable, the implementation tends to have been limited by the technology of the times.

Still, while not being orchestral, the music in old videogames is good in its own right. Has its own charm.

Compare Castlevania, for example. I can remember the music from the first games being great to listen to, even if they're just midi, and fitting the game perfectly, while the new Castlevania game on the 36' and PS3 has orchestral music that may not fit the game at all times.

I understand you. Besides, I haven´t been a gamer or a movie-fan, so, my knowledge is very limited about the topic.

But... I recently played this PC videogame. It´s just brutal (If you are into puzzles), and very artistic. Loved the soundtrack.

No, not orchestra music. Don't know where you picked up that out of my post.

MIDI music is not something you listen to in your car or on your expensive hi-fi system. It's important here to differentiate between the music-as-written and the music-as-performed. For example, I'm sure we all have a particular performance of a particular favorite song that stands above all other performances of the very same written music. Perhaps the arrangement, the choice of instrument to play each part, the sound of the instruments, etc.

In this case, I am saying that while old-skool 8bit games have some great melodic writing, the implementation is not something most people would want to listen to in and of itself, detached from the video media.

I'm actually not surprised that so many of the Symphony X crowd have posted video game soundtracks instead of film or other media.

When I was a kid I used to listen to midi songs on my walkman

Anyway, on topic, Ennio Morricone is hands down the most unique and best composer in cinema. I have some compilation album that I regularly listen to.

As for games, my favorites are:

Castlevania music has already been mentioned here. Great music that fits metal particularly well. The video game music themed power metal band Powerglove even did a CV medley.

They also did a cover of this:

It is from a metal themed fighting game called Guilty Gear. It is metal themed in that the OST is mostly metal based as the creator is a metalhead. Even a lot of the characters and moves are named after famous bands across all metal genres.

For non-metal related stuff I can't believe nobody has mentioned this:

Also, just about anything from the Xenogears OST is excellent, but this track in particular always almost puts me in tears:

I have never been too big a fan of the current gaming generation OST's being so "epic" orchestra heavy as I feel most of it is done cheesy and sounds the same; however, there are still occasional newer OST's that are great such as this:

Hearing that Braid soundtrack makes me want to to back and play the game so much... unfortunately it's impossible to go back and do the puzzles for the first time and that's what really makes the game.

Would The Lord Of The Rings soundtrack be too mainstream for the people here? There's perhaps hundreds of soundtracks that I've loved over the years but none comes to mind as my favourite like Lord Of The Rings does.

Absolutely not. It is excellent, a top notch example of doing a soundtrack right.

So many game mentions, and so few films.

I covered hundreds of films by mentioning Ennio Morricone.

I guess I could mention some more. I also dig the LOTR one btw. I actually have it on a physical CD (!).

This one is fantastic. From a fantastic movie as well:
