Im just interested in seeing ....

How many people will say that the song 'A Natural Disaster' bears no resemblance to Portishead.

Im not suggesting that Danny 'Ripped Off' Portishead, all im asking is ' can you hear a similarity' be it intentional or not. OK?

If youre not familiar with Portisheads style then dont vote.

Go .....

Let me state again - Im not causing trouble here. Im not accusing anyone of anything. Im simply interested in the opinion of the forum users, and specifically in can they hear a resemblance.

what's the point?? even if there is a resemblance who cares? if teh song is good then it is enough. If we have to assimilate each and every artist to another one in the whole music industry well...it'll take a lifetime..so why do it with Anathema's music??

Im not doing it with Anathemas music im doing it with one single track, and Im asking because Im interested in how many people will say it doesnt sound like Portishead - thats my reason for starting this poll. Im not rallying round the forumers asking to gang up on one opinion or another. I want to know how many people think that song does or doesnt sound like Portishead.

You ask whats the point - I say the point is to see where everyones head is at. You say if theres a resemblance who cares? Youre spot on there! Exactly - why should anyone care? I dont. But people do and seeing as this is a popular argument at the moment and this is a forum that has polls then who cares if i do a poll or not?

i dont find any resemblance to portishead at all. the content...the lyrics, the guitars, the drums, the bass-playing, the boys' vox at the end...im sorry. yes, it has a female vocal lead, but that's all there is to it. i cant hear any gibbons or utley or barrow on it...maybe it's my problem since it seems im the only one who voted no.

i heard a ripp off today on the radio. i guess there are several bands copying portishead.... but id rather know if danny was really influenced by portishead for writing this song, or that it just happened to be simelar.

I say NO, and for the following reasons:

1. On the surface, Portishead's music is layed with jazz guitars, samples, turntables, down-beats and haunted house/sci-fi melodies. Anathama's song does not include any of these things and is more organic sounding.

2. Musical backgrounds. Portishead's sound is based pre-dominately in American "black" music. Utley is a jazz guitarist and Barrow's roots are in the hip-hop/DJ scene. In fact, he sites the first Gravediggaz album (and probably the first Wu-Tang) as an important influence in the melodies when he was first writing songs for Portishead. Anathema's musical background is based on more traditionally rock based music, such as The Beatles, Jeff Buckley and (to a lesser extent in recent years) Pink Floyd. These influences shine thru in both of their sounds, and I find them unsimilar.

3. Vocals. This sounds almost nothing like Beth Gibbons. Gibbons has a more up front, tense, confrontational voice. She sounds more, I dunno, bitter or sad. Whoever it singing in this (is it John's sister or Vinny/Danny/Jamie's cousin?) sounds more at ease and comforting. A hint of sadness, but a lot more relaxed than Gibbons. Reminds me a litte bit of Lisa Hannigan, but just a little bit. However I can hear a bit of Janis Joplin in both of their voices. They may have a few similar influences, but sound nothing alike.

I remember all this shit about how Hooverphonic sounded "like Portishead" when ANSSS came out. When I listened to it I was like "No, it fucking doesn't". And for the record, I don't hear any Portishead in Antimatter either. Where the fuck do you people come up with this shit. It's like someone who has no idea of what they're talking about saying that Iron Maiden and Metallica sound the same because they're both hard rock bands. Open your fucking ears!

Hooverphonic is known, just not that well known. Their most recent album still hasn't had an American release. 2 Wicky was used in a scene in the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, however.

ah yeah youre talking bout the 'hoover' one there. ah they have simelarities, esp that hoover cd. it starts from the beginning with that the rythm part. then the use of the samples. and then that 2nd song. it couldve almost been taken from 'dummy' its obvious that there are resemblances.

same story for 'and'

hooverphonic is a top band. a band where we can be really proud of :D cheers

ah and get your hands on 'sit down and listen to hooverphonic'. its superb! btw maybe you want to try to order from a belgian site. so youll get the new single which is included in the belgian version

Also, seeing as how Gravediggaz are an influence on Portishead, whenever one is comparing a song to Portishead they should from now on compare it to Gravediggaz instead. Like this:

"Yeah man! Antimatter sounds just like Gravediggaz."

I have spoken.
