To be fair, it appears that this is in the "Essential" series, which every major band over 20 years old seems to release these days, so it should be seen as a good thing that Maiden are included in such a group. And yeah, I know I don't have to buy it, and I won't be, but you know how much I like to whinge. And yeah, it includes a sneak peek at the Duck of Death live DVD.

From Blabbermouth:

Legendary metal band IRON MAIDEN will release the career-spanning, two-CD compilation "The Essential Iron Maiden" through Sanctuary Records on July 12, 2005.

"The Essential Iron Maiden" features some of the greatest heavy metal music ever recorded. IRON MAIDEN have had huge worldwide impact these past 25 years thanks to all-time classic albums like "Iron Maiden", "Killers", "The Number Of The Beast", "Piece Of Mind", "Powerslave", "Live After Death", "Somewhere In Time", "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son", "No Prayer For The Dying", "Fear Of The Dark", "The X Factor", "Virtual XI", "Brave New World", "Dance Of Death" and other live albums. Every studio album and lineup of IRON MAIDEN is represented here. The package also includes sleeve notes from noted journalist Lonn Friend. A sneak preview of the upcoming double live DVD and CD "Death On The Road" is provided thanks to the inclusion of "Iron Maiden" from this CD/DVD.

The current, longtime lineup of vocalist Bruce Dickinson, guitarist Dave Murray, guitarist Adrian Smith, guitarist Janick Gers, bass guitarist Steve Harris and drummer Nicko McBrain recorded and filmed "Death On The Road" in Germany in 2003 on the "Dance Of Death" tour.

The songs on "The Essential Iron Maiden" are:

IRON MAIDEN will be touring North America again this summer as co-headliners with BLACK SABBATH on Ozzfest 2005, the 10th anniversary of the enormously popular festival.

Futureal rules, y'all. No need for a Bruce version of it, the original is just fine by me.

At least it has Fear of the Dark (live), which I'm assuming is their Grammy-nominated effort from A Real Live One.

Warning : Do not try this at home, it will wreck you forever.

One day, I realised that "Mummy's little baby likes shortnin' shortnin" fitted into the guitar part of "Fear of the Dark".

It's like the ring...it won't stop.

I agree, everything should have Hallowed be thy name (I'd drop be quick or be dead)

Ahh, I see my confusion. Fear Of The Dark on A Real Live One is from Finland, yes, BUT on my rerelease with cd-rom material, on the same disc, there is a live clip of Fear Of The Dark from the Live At Donington gig lol.

I never listen to A Real Live/Dead One, Live At Donington is so much better for the No Prayer and Fear Of The Dark era stuff, and Beast Over Hammersmith and other various live material are better for the early stuff.

I wish I had seen them on the Fear Of The Dark tour, I actually like the setlists from that tour, different stuff than they play on most other tours. Be Quick Or Be Dead, Holy Smoke, Wasting Love, all good stuff. Although I was only 8 when they toured here on that tour...
