I finally looked into it and Dick Dale is the shit. I downloaded his best of album, he does a song with Stevie Ray Vaughn that's also pretty good.

I haven't really found any other similar bands, anyone know of any? If you can rustle up something a bit 'darker' in theme that'd be extra cool.

Ignoring the nonsense about Tarantino, and that this thread is getting on in years, you should check out The Aqua Velvets, Insect Surfers, The Space Cossacks (probably my favourite), Atomic Mosquitos, maybe Satan's Pilgrims. Yawning Man are pretty surfy, though I've never seen them classified as such (and I wouldn't).
