safe but not far from the city
the site bnr metal encourages users to vote for their choice of top ten metal records for each year (starting a long way back, with most of the polls obviously closed by now). what follows are the results from the year 2000 forward, as chosen by what i will from now on refer to as the internet, or 1337-speaking twelve-year-old counterstrike players for short.

you can comment on the results if you want - actually, i know you want to - but i'm mostly interested in knowing how many of the records listed (a) you've heard of; (b) you've listened to, possibly more than once; (c) you own, and whether by that you mean you bought the record or downloaded a scene leak or wrestled a master copy out of the hands of the drummer.

you don't have to be accurate, it's not a survey. just give me a general idea of how popular the popular stuff is around here. i'd like noobs and lurker to reply to this thread, too, as i can probably guess the answers of the regulars already and i like to be surprised. granted, i also like to sit cradling in my lap a ripe pineapple, so you shouldn't take my inclinations as a tell-tale sign of anything except maybe serious mental disorder.

Heh, interesting, Ive heard of all of the records, been listening to Opeth, Nevermore, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, SOAD, Megadeth, Dimmu, DT and Mastodon and I own a lot of them, in all the forms youve mentioned. Its funny how the top tens of bnr match my own top tens and how the internet ones differ from them. BNR have a good taste! :)

Who the fuck voted Opeth and, Hell forbid, Blind Crappian over DT, these people need
to be taken behind the sauna and given the final treatment.

As for the albums, heard most of them and came to the obvious conclusion that most
bands/music past 1996 sucks ass and doesn't warrant a second listening.

I've heard of all of them. Additional information follows.

I have heard of most of those records, but have actually listened to less than half of them - and I don't feel bad for that.

The only really good ones from those lists are:

2000: None (Clayman by In Flames being the closest)

2001: Blackwater Park by Opeth

2002: Damage Done by you-know-who & Delivarance by Opeth

2003: None (Damnation by Opeth being the closest)

2004: None

-Villain

a) I've heard of all of them... I don't know many people (in to metal) who haven't.

b) 6 from 2000 - 8 from 2001 - 7 from 2002 - 9 from 2003 - 9 from 2004.

c) 3 from 2000 - 7 from 2001 - 5 from 2002 - 7 from 2003 - 7 from 2004.

Along with the general consensus so far I'd have to agree those lists are pretty shit. although a few of the albums would have made it in. I'm shocked to see In Their Darkened Shrines is not there (2002). Especially seen as though Immortal are, and they are equally (well maybe not quite) pummeling.

Interesting that Demons and Wizards made it into the 2000 list.

i know all the bands, though i hardly have any of the records mentioned, even as mp3. i'm not too much into more classical /power metal, so stuff like maiden, halford, symphony x and the like make my ears bleed. so what i actually own is the following:

cradle of filth - midian -> quite decent to listen to once a year or so
in flames - clayman -> stays in the rack
system of a down - -> toxicity is played too often in discos and pubs to be played at home
opeth - blackwater park -> gets a spin every week
dimmu borgir - puritanical euphoric misanthropia -> impressive drumming, but don't listen to it that much, has worn out a bit
opeth - deliverance -> the songs could use a little more balance, but otherwise good
dark tranquillity - damage done -> i mostly play along to this one with drums
immortal - sons of northern darkness -> currently in my car, always funny
soilwork - natural born chaos -> can't really hear it anymore
dimmu borgir - death cult armageddon -> boring over time
opeth - damnation ok
metallica - st. anger -> i can hear cooking pots in the kitchen, thank you
cradle of filth - damnation and a day -> decent
mastodon - leviathan -> recently got into this, teh win!

most of these named bands I have never heard of.
on the contrary, most albums of 2004 that I count my favourites are not listed.

what the heck - who cares

I never download, always buy the disc, I've probably at one time owned at least half of what's listed... Lamb of God, I will be praising them till my last breath, They are the future of metal.

I'll just go through these more or less collectively rather than year by year, since that would be boring.
Heard of all of the bands, which is no hard task for anyone involved in metal a bit deeper than the surface. On the list of every year, I've properly listened to 4-7 of the albums. Many artists would appear annually had they released an album, and I can't say that I've ever found a particular interest in Cradle Of Filth or Dimmu Borgir. Well those are pretty much the only ones though, even if not the only ones I've not heard. Prejudices.
Anyway, I own 1-3 albums from the 2000, 2002 and 2003 lists. I have owned 4 from the 2002 list, but I sold one and gave one away as a gift. I would like to own 3-6 albums per a list, meaning that I've downloaded all of those. I'm not sure I'll ever buy some of them, though, because some are kind of in the middle, not terribly bad but not much at all good either (or as good as they used to be). Or they just have too much bad parts to counter the good parts, like with both of the Dream Theater albums.

Alexi Laiho is a cunt. And a squirrel.

but its always the same bands who are popular and in these top lists. I just wondered to find mastodon and dark tranquillity. nearly noone of my friends likes DT, or better knows DT.I always tell them how great they are and give them their cds...
but opeth are really popular now, but IMO a little bit overrated,(their first 3 albums are one of the ebst in metal ever )but after still life they repeated themself.

8. iron maiden - rock in rio Nowhere near good.

2. dimmu borgir - death cult armageddon A good album in its own way.

4. nightwish - once A few pretty bad songs (people seem to like them though) but other than that it's a nice CD.

6. lamb of god - ashes of the wake Deleted after listening to a few of the songs.
7. mastodon - leviathan Deleted almost immediately.
8. slipknot - vol. 3: the subliminal verses Downloaded for the curiosity, then deleted after a couple of songs.

Heh, I just decided to rank all the albums I own from those lists - as there are not that many of them, I put them all together, not caring about years.

Dark Tranquillity: Damage Done - No, its not the best album of these past five years, but it certainly is better than anything else on these lists.

Opeth: Deliverance - A good Opeth-album with one great song (the title-track), but overall much weaker than, say, Still Life.

Opeth: Blackwater Park - A mediocre Opeth-album, but much better than anything else that came out in 2001.

Soilwork: Natural Born Chaos - The best Soilwork-album in my honest opinion.

Opeth: Damnation - Fine, certainly not bad, but I'd have expected so much more from Opeth.

In Flames: Clayman - A good album, just nowhere near The Jester Race or Whoracle.

In Flames: Reroute to Remain - Originally a huge disappointment to me, I have since started to like it a bit (still haven't bought StYE).

Children of Bodom: Hate Crew Deathroll - The best CoB-album in my opinion; refreshing song-structures.

Megadeth: The World Needs a Hero - An okay album.

Children of Bodom: Follow the Reaper - A couple of very good songs, but overall a weak album.

Dream Theater: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
- A double-album with less than one album's worth of good material.

Nightwish: Century Child - The most boring Nightwish-album I have listened to; I still haven't bought Once because of how I felt with this one.

Pantera: Reinventing the Steel - The worst Pantera-album.

The rest - either pure crap or I just haven't bothered to buy them.
