I recently got Matters of the Dark. I started listening to it and it is not what I expected. Not sure where I got my expectations from, but I was expecting a darker and heavier, and possibly more doomy brand of metal. It seems like pretty standard power metal/heavy metal.

Am I missing something?

^FUCKING that.
Their older stuff is more doomy, but they are now beastly power metal. Unfortunately Urban Breed (vocalist) has left, so that beastliness will probably diminish, but Matters of the Dark is fucking awesome. Modus Vivendi is more varied but less consistent, but worth picking up.

I think Modus Vivendi is by far thier best effort.
The great Urban Breed (now in Pyramaze) actually left TM awhile ago. They brought in Joe Comeau, started writing, no news for the longest time, and then apparently Comeau on vocals just didn't work out. Good news finally...they have Ronnie Hemlin (Steel Attack) on vocals and in writing mode...I was very excited to hear about Ronnie, this could be a good fit!
