Not much of a metal engineer at all, but we got a 2x12 mesa cab at our studio today so I had to test it out. Decided to run with my 5150 for this to try and get a metal tone.....

I used the Metaltastic 18v emg81 di's and took a small section to test it out.

There's 4 different mixes:

Single 57 Rhythm Channel

Single 57 Lead Channel

57 and a Beta 57 (had to test that out too) Rhythm Channel

Only processing was HPF at 60hz and a LPF at 12.5k

Just curious to hear what you guys think of these tones....

Very nice and clean tone, my favourite is 57 & Beta LEAD. and out of the single mics the RHYTHM tone.
for the dual tone - on and off angle? or mic per speaker?

57 was pretty much straight on, and the beta 57 was 45 degrees to that....basically the "fredmann" technique or whatever it's called.

I really like the tones man. they have a nice direct sound but still sound clean (as naked potato already said).

I'd love to hear a whole song with a good mix and stuff around this tone. :)

Honestly, I gotta say I'm not that big a fan - feels too middy (a bit "telephone"-like) and slightly undergained :erk:

you can add more gain and scoop the mids a little bit and send us the update again...

were you trying to match the sound on the Depth Charge riff or not?

maybe that's why it sounds undergained , which does not mean that the sound itself is not good... me still like.
