Thales – Promo 2003

Helsinki’s Thales are a melodic/technical death metal five piece, comprising guitarists Lasse Kristiansen and Jani Mikkonen, Juha Tretjakov on bass, drummer Juuso Backman, and vocalist Karri Suoraniemi. All competent musicians, the frequent time and dynamic changes throughout prove no challenge. Guitars take the form of distorted yet melodic leads, and crunchy rhythm work, while occasional dual melodies are present in the layered riffage. Reflective acoustics – used in stripped down atmospheric sections – are also effective. Opeth is an obvious influence in this respect, while complex bass rings of the Gothenburg legend’s earlier work. The drums are tight, following the differing dynamics well, and show plenty of variation, making them interesting throughout. The vocals are for the most part a death growl, but occasional (rough) singing, speech, whispering and very subtle falsetto provide contrast, and make for an honest front to the sound.

Production wise, the demo could be far worse - every instrument is audible, and quiet sections don’t leave you reaching for the volume. Considering tribulations like broken equipment, the band have done a very good job. The addition of a vocalist means “Promo 2003” is far more polished than the Thales’ previous demos, which is reflected in professional packaging and a good quality release. The music has also developed, having a far stronger identity than previously, despite apparent influences. Fans of melodic/progressive death should check Thales out, as if the band continue to develop in the manner they have to date, a bright future awaits them.
