That Damn Drummer In Amon Amarth

Ah, don't think I've seen her.

What show are you talking about - Opeth or Arch Enemy?
Does anyone know how the typical Opeth show and crowd reaction look like? Are all the people holding hands together swaying side to side or do they hold the lighters up? Must be quite something ;)

NP: Hollenthon - Domus Mundi

Well, you can't like everything :)

It took me a while to get into them. I can't say I'm their biggest fan - some of their materials sound like just random chords, but they definately have some great stuff aswell.

They seem to be pretty goddamned skilled, and every section if the band seems top-notch. I guess noone here would ever complain about Martin Lopez at least ;)

okay, as some have already said, there is absolutley no trick to devoloping db skills. The thing that I developed as a quite effective exercise was to put a metronome on a tempo that you're comfortable with, but will challenge you over longer periods of time, and play sixteenth notes with your feet to the metronome for a half an hour...i reccomend doing the same excersise with sixteenth note triplets at a redefined tempo. This is not only an excellent leg training and stamina exercise, but one hopefully picks up little physical quirks in your playing that may help to steady you and solidify your playing. To the guy who says he plays heel down, I highly, highly reccomend learning how to play heel up, this will instantly yield more power and more speed to your playing...even many of the great jazz drummers played heel up when things got interesting and intense.

Man, do I have to play heel up? It's so uncomfortable...all your weight is focused on your tailbone, whereas flat foot is normal weight distribution. Beside, if it's harder to play fast flat-footed, I'd say I was pretty good, then, eh?

AA has fast double bass??? *scratches head* :err:

Regarding that i want to say that hes not disrecpecting AA in any way... unless he actually means hes slow as hell. I know a few
drummers who double pedals faster then AA and i dont mean anything bad regarding Fredrik.Personnaly Fredrik is better in other area of drumming then doing double,im not saying he stinks by ANY MEANS at the double! I think hes amongst the best! Plus I reeeaaaaaly love the ideas he as!

This thread is being revived! I have been playing drums almost 2 years now, the last year I have been practicing mainly double bass style drumming like Fredrik. I seem to making no progress at all. I recently bought a electronic set so I can play whenever I want but I still just can't loosen up my legs. I can only get to a slow double bass speed like at the begining of Ghost of Perdition by Opeth. Even after about 1 minute of that I can't keep up, my legs tense up and start going different speeds. I have a Iron Cobra double pedal with the tension all the way up. I play heel-up style. I have tried certain exercises with no progress. Any drummers here have some advice for me? How high to set throne, how far, anything!

Best advice try to sit so you can play relaxed and without stress on any muscles. How high/far is a matter of taste and personal preferences and doesn't even matter if you're tall or short I've seen everything.
I sit fairly low have about a 90 degree angle on my knees. I play in theory heel-up but I have my feet really low, just above the ground.

Practice wise, you can try build up independence and strength in left and right leg by leading with both when you play regular beats. Usually what happens when you start playing db is that left leg is weaker, assuming you're a right hand drummer.
And find a pace where you can play solid and relaxed, practice and increase the tempo later on.
You can also practice by simply playing on the ground without any pedals or anything, just sit on your stool and play with your feet on the floor. just do it relaxed.
I find drumming on an electronic kit is a lot more flimsy than real drums and that might also explain your troubles.
But if your legs tense up it sounds like you're not sitting right/comfortably or you're not playing relaxed. try different sitting positions.

Good luck!

Wow, I didn't expect a repy from the man himself! Thanks for taking time to give me some advice man! :notworthy
Well, I do practice when I'm sitting at computer listening to music and I seem 10x more relaxed and can actually keep up with Death in Fire for a little bit, but when I sit at the kit it goes to shit. Yes I agree with you electronic kits are alot flimsier and don't have the same feel as an acoustic set. I have nowhere to play them at the time, they're just sitting stacked up in my room.. so I gotta get use to electronic for now I guess. I have my throne at about knee high, but my leg angle isn't full 90 degrees I think. I am a right hand drummer and you're right, my left leg isn't as strong as my right. I try to play with left leg just normal beats and it's pretty shitty. I don't really understand what you mean by leading with both feet, do you mean just switching around which feet you are using playing normal beats?
Thanks alot, again!

What my friend used to do was take his double kick pedal and put it against the wall with a piece of cardboard in front of it (so as not to damage the wall) and practice his double kick while playing video games. He got real good real fast because he was literally practicing about 18 hours a day (yeah he plays a lot of video games hahahaha), so if you can find a way to practice it without sitting in front of the drum kit, it will help because your practice time will increase

I actually had that idea some time ago!

Definitely sounds like you need to work on using your left foot, Greiv. This thread made me lose a bet with myself, I was betting it would draw out Thyrmfal, so he could wrestle this draugr into submission. :p

Wait a sec what happened to Tim Yeong it says nothin bout a new drummer for Hate Eternal on www.hateeternal.com. That can't be right because if Tim Yeong was replaced it would have said so on their site.
But damn 300 bpm shit u know ur good if u can do that and not have ur legs be extremely tired. damn. Where did i hear Hoglan's bpm? hmmmm I forgot but I think Hoglan was fater then that. I think that's the koolest thing a fat guy bein able to play drums an double bass like that fast shows u that if u practice anyone can do it. LONG LIVE GENE HOGLAN!

Derek Roddy did drums on King of All Kings and I, Monarch. :err:
