Instead of Rothery and Petrucci (and Doug :D), we get Hammet and Cobain... that´s one sad excuse of a joke of a list.
Seriously!! I just saw this issue this past weekend and didn't get a chance to look inside....my friend Dave told me though, and I was SHOCKED to put it midly!!!!!!!! I think a few people nearby might have thought I was being killed when they heard my shrieks when he told me

Who was missing.....

No Steve Vai
No Joe Satriani
No John Petrucci
No Alex Skolnick

Are they wacked or what???

Who was on it....

Kurt Cobain?
Kirk Hammett?

You must be joking!!!!!

And finally, who was near the bottom...

Eddie Van Halen #70
Randy Rhoads #85
Tony Iommi #86

Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life at RS anymore!!!

surprised rik emmett didn't make the list ! there's more to him besides his past involvement with triumph that makes him an exceptional, versatile guitarist, he's managed to put out a classical guitar album, a jazz album, a blues album, and mainstream rock albums, not to mention his great vocals and songwriting ability !!! :Spin: also what about alex lifeson? the guy seems to refine his sound with each studio album and that certainly counts for something, over 30 years and still kicking ass, certainly one of the most innovative guitarists of our time !

I hear ya - yep he is another one missed on this list --- I can't believe RS actually wrote and had the guts to print that list!!!!

One more I didn't mention in my post but some of you might agree with - although he died way too young... I've been thinking about him lately as I get ready for his 10-yr memorial concert next month....Criss Oliva. He was truly gifted and it is so sad that so few (relatively) got to see him play. His music lives on, though...

He and his Sava-brethren is why my avatar is what it is.

yup Oliva was very entertaining. "Ghost in the Ruins" makes frequent appearances on my Bose.

gotta remember, RS lost its relevance around 1972 :) alot of those guys on the list deserve it because of their innovations, initiation of trends, etc., but you get the feeling some are there just because of some sort of culture value.

We all know that RS and every other mainstream publication hates metal or prog or any music where the bands actually write their own songs and play their own instruments, as opposed to the media darlings that are actually wannabe strippers about five years from a Playboy layout to shore up a sagging career and have every note pro-tooled and autotuned to death, but by not including Vai, and not having Eddie Van Halen in the top ten, this list is totally invalidated. I mean, can you think of a more influential guitar player in the last 20 or so years than EVH?

I think this list was randomly generated by a pack of rabid squirrels. Which, come to think of it, would explain a lot about Rolling Stone...

And yeah, you guys should have heard Mare yelling when I was telling her about the list. I think everyone on the PSU campus heard her agonized cry of "NO VAI?!?!?!?"...

Sheesh... lame.

I've had a low opinion RS since I moved to the Cleveland area and found out that WMMS had been voted the best radio station in the nation for several years in a row. That radio station sucked, and even now only sucks a little less.

Joan Jett?!!! Gimme a break!

What about:

Eric Johnson
Albert King
Ottmar Liebert (sp)

That list is a "you're not cool if you don't like them" list.

I heartily agree with EJ and Ottmar Liebert - however it's spelled! Can't say I'm familiar with Albert King, though!

Cheers!

Indeed, leaving out Satriani and Vai is making yourself rediculous, as well is leaving in Hammett and Cobain.

In addition to most of the names already mentioned: where the hell is Chris Duarte?!

Heh, I think this list has been posted on just about every forum out there, accompanied by a "Why wasn't ____on there?". I think Doug definitely deserves to be on there, as well as John Petrucci, Devin Townsend, Roine Stolt, and many others, but unfortunately, nobody really knows who they are, and the guys who make these lists tend to focus on the impact the musicians have made on the music scene. While all of the guys I previously mentioned are some of the most talented out there, they've barely made a blip in the large scheme of things, which is unfortunate, considering that they potentially could, but oh well, that's just the way it is.

On the upside, I think it's cool that John McLaughlin made the list. I really wasn't expecting him to be there.

Can't say too much about Devin Townsend, but what from I did hear I didn't think of him as a master guitarist. Musician or composer maybe.

Stolt?! He is definitely NOT a great guitarist... Erm, in my and oh so many others' humble opinions that is...

Vincent Fis - guitarist of Belgian prog band Now was also very good. He's now playing with an AC/DC coverband, I read somewhere...

Another one: Bob Hoezen, guitarist of Dutch band Bagheera, who sadly are no longer active.

And some of my favourite guitarists: Niall Mathewson of Pallas, and Bill Berends of Mastermind.
