The Black Dahlia Murder – Unhallowed
Metalblade Records – June 2003
By Russell Garwood

The Black Dahlia Murder are a hardcore-influenced death metal band signed to Metalblade Records. In contradistinction to many of their musically similar label mates, T.B.D.M. have a slightly more varied sound with nods to thrash and speed metal, as well as gore elements and melodic touches. This makes for an extreme but relatively accessible album; the triggered drums of Cory Grady tend to rely on blasts and double-bass rolls, which are fast but can begin to drag, while sporadic fills introduce variation. The guitars of John Kempainen and Brian Eschbach use occasional dual melodies, and have found a nice balance between technicality, melody and extremity. Vocals come courtesy of Trevor Strnad – a relatively high pitched rasp - and guitarist Brian, whose more traditional guttural death growl is an interesting contrast, the two styles being played against each other to great effect. The bass of David Lock is audible and completes a tight rhythm section, which is needed for such high tempo-driven songs.

This all makes for a solid release that shows a high degree of technical ability and brutality. This said, the band’s songwriting could be improved, as it would be nice to hear more variation in speed and dynamics, and the lyrics are also nothing special. “Unhallowed” is a good choice if you are looking for some unforgiving listening.
