New doc makes Star Wars fandom seem cool as a Calrissian
Here’s some important background information you probably don’t know: Back in 1977, an up-and-coming director by the name of George Lucas created a pioneering science fiction movie titled Star Wars. Perhaps you heard about it in a film history class. Well, it turns out the movie was fairly well received and apparently there are still ardent fans around today. Crazy!
Documenting that fan culture is the new film Jedi Junkies. Think of it as sort of a Trekkies for the Star Wars set, and you’ll immediately realize why we at GCD are so stoked to be able to bring you the exclusive details prior to the official announcement of the film’s release later this week.
Geeking out over its subjects’ geek outs, the documentary tags along with the coolest, craziest fans it could find. There are the New York Jedi, who teach classes in lightsaber fighting, there are the guys who made the comedy web series Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager, there’s the intergalactic thrash band AeroSith, there’s a pair of dudes building a Millennium Falcon in their backyard and, of course, there are some Slave Leias. (OK, there are lots and lots of Slave Leias.) Along the way the filmmakers also get insight from the likes of Ray “Darth Maul” Park, Peter “Chewbacca” Mayhew and Olivia “Attack of the Show” Munn.
Available for purchase or rental on iTunes, Jedi Junkies is the Star Wars fan film Star Wars fans have been waiting for. The Force is strong with this one.
