I think the bottom line for me about the whole debate about The Darkness is....why is there even a debate about it? lol I dont mean a debate on this forum but just in general, I see and hear so many people arguing about whether or not its good or bad, or deserves to be popular or not, etc. For me, its just silly fun music. I like it alot but I mean I could never compare it against something like Anathema or Tool or something, because its just a completely different thing for me. The Darkness might not be a straight up "joke band" but I think it's meant to be listened to with the mentality that its not really meant to be thought about too much, just kinda fun silly music. Some people dont care for that type of thing, and thats totally fine. But I think Paul is right, a huge portion of music, both underground and mainstream, has really leaned towards the more serious sophisticated side for a while now, which is just fine, but when something like The Darkness comes along, for a lot of people its just a bit of a relief, something that you can sort of chuckle at but at the same time find yourself singing along to and humming the guitar parts. I can totally understand why they wouldnt necessarily be everyone's cup of tea, but regardless, just because its a bit silly and over the top doesn't mean it doesn't have it's place.....but then again, I like Weird Al and I still watch Sesame Street sometimes, so what the fuck do I know?
I'd rather watch and listen to some silly british poofter scream his ass of in a leotard and get a laugh out of it, than endure one more fucking band with some guy with a backwards baseball hat moaning about how awful his life is because of his sad childhood, meanwhile he lives in a mansion and has a 1.5 million dollar tour bus just for himself LOL At least when we write songs about how miserable we are, we can back it up!
I would hope noone on earth would ever want to shoot me in my car for what I was happening to be listening to. People get way too caught up in this shit. Its just music. Music is my life, and for fuck sake, even I dont take it all that seriously.
