There were two bands playing before The Gathering, Unexpect and Giant Squid. All three are on The End Records in the US. I couldn't stand Unexpect for more than 5 minutes and had to go sit at the bar in the entrance of the concert place where they were playing Radiohead's OK Computer. I have no idea why The End would sign such a band. Anyway, the second band Giant Squid was a good deal better, though they couldn't pull of the vocals that well live. The last song they played was really good, the trumpet actually worked in a way it didn't in the other songs. This band might be worth checking out, if other songs are like the last few minutes of that one.
The Gathering were excellent. This was my first time seeing the band live and I was really impressed how well everyone plays, especially the guitarist Rene Rutten. Anneke is just phenomenal, she really shines in a live setting. They played (in order) Liberty Bell, Even the Spirits are Afraid, Saturnine, These Good People, Shortest Day and two more songs off Home, Broken Glass, Travel, In Motion II, Eleanor and Black Light District. They first ended on Travel and left the stage. I was really in a trance when that song ended. It was even better than the performance on Sleepy Buildings. Then they came back for half an hour more to play the remaining three songs. Black Light District was not the best choice to end the night with, I think - it was just OK, they have much better songs. I think the last song for the night should have been Travel. I was expecting a mellower concert, more like the one on Sleepy Buildings, but the sound was much heavier. I like the sound on Sleepy Buildings a lot, but I can't really complain about last night either. If I have a chance to see them live again, I will not miss the opportunity.
