The Gathering > you.

Was, I'd say - until she and the guys started making absolutely boring music, back in '98 or so...

Nighttime Birds is still a good album, and Mandylion has always a place in my heart, for being a masterpiece of emotional music.

Well...I've only heard Mandylion. I know that their earlier stuff before Anneke was death metal, and apparantly their later stuff is boring and crap...I hope it isn't true to me, at least. Is How to Measure a Planet like Mandylion at all?

I wholeheartedly agree...HTMAP is nothing like Mandylion, you nearly have to treat both CDs as if they were done by different bands (with the exception of the constant excellence of the vocals). HTMAP is very ambient and Radiohead-ish while Mandylion is emotional rock.

I would recommend if_then_else to the Gathering newbie, since it combines the emotional rock of Mandylion, the serenity of Nighttime Birds, and the ambient aspect of HTMAP.

Anekke IS my goddess....
And she weren't Death metal before Mandylion, because Mandylion is her first album.

How to Measure a Planet? is the Gathering's best album, methinks. The 28-minute title track is simply breathtaking.

And, btw, Radiohead are shit compared to them.

sorry, but i find the gathering kind of boring. i got mandylion after i heard people here rave about the gathering and was disappointed. the riffs are not very interesting at all, and the keyboard doesn't really add any much needed melody. sure, anneke's a good singer, but the band is BORING, the only saving grace is anneke's voice.

I love the Gathering. HTMAP was a very good album. If_Then_else is ok, 2 really stunning tracks, a couple of pretty good ones, the rest are ok. Hopefully working with Garm on the next one will bring them back to their best.....

Man, you need to check out the video The Gathering did for 'Leaves'. Anneke is cute as hell in that one, it'll make you melt.
And she could kick Angela's ass (which I'd actually pay to see... ;))

Well, it seems I'm one of the few people in here who really like HTMAP and If_Then_Else. I believe that this style really fits the band perfectly. I'm really looking forward to their next album...

How To Measure A Planet has been at first one of the worst albums i had, then after abouut 5 listens it got better and well now its probably one of my all time favourite albums...it used to be boring, but one day it just clicked and its one of my best albums :) if_then_else is great too, Saturnine, Amity and track 7, um whats it called...um, anyway those are the best, the others are just plain brilliant, bad movie scene being extremely depressing, oh and RADIOHEAD are brilliant, dont mess.

strangely enough i dont like the other albums as much...and they say A NEW ALBUM is coming out this year!!!! yay to the gathering...now all they need to do is get their arses down here for the first time ever...and take lacuna coil with you.

I played both HtMaP CDs dozens of times, and still the only song I really liked was Illuminating - I found the title-track extremely bad. Finally, after years of torturing myself by trying to "get into" that album, I traded it for Rebirth by Pain - a trade I haven't regretted for a second.

About If_Then_Else, already wary (because of HtMaP) I listened it through in the store before buying. The first two songs I liked, but the rest was so damn boring that I did not buy it. Later - thinking to myself: what it if had some good songs I just missed - I went and downloaded the generally most liked track from ITE, Saturnine. I listened to it for a week, and realized it was crap.

After that, I haven't even thought about buying a new The Gathering album - although I'd like to get that Adrenaline / Leaves MCD.

And Radiohead does simply nothing for me.

with that adorable little red nose! :)

I'm entirely with Villain on this topic.

yeah im with soundmaster, those are fucking awesome, last 4 minutes of Travel blow me away, brilliant, and i used the ending music of Great Ocean Road as the bit in my Media film where the person gets stabbed and falls to the floor :)

hmn, i found some MP3 of leaves live with an orchestra or something, crap recording but anyway...

and does anyone else see a similarity between the gathering and jeff buckley? i think theyre pretty simillar in a way, oh yeah and if you havent already dont bother getting the Amity EP, its shit, you get a video for some newish song, which is shite and remixes that are poor.

I have Nighttime Birds and really love it. I think Anneke's vocals are incredible, and that album is overall very good. I haven't heard any of the other albums because I was under the assumption that they weren't as good and were completely different styles. I will have to check out some of the other stuff some time. ;)
